I did it, I left power to my water heater and NO WATER was in it, now the heating element must be changed, any one changed a suburban heating element, just looking seems some of the gas pluming has to be removed.
If the heating element is a screw in type you can purchase at "HOME DEPOT",also have the necessary socket to remove and reinstall. The replacement element is 1,500 watts wereas OEM is 1440 watts.
Take less then 10 minutes to replace.
HEAVYEQUIPTMENTMOVER I wish you had been right about taking 10 min to do, I used a 1 1/2 inch 10 point socket and it would roll on it, I go to local hardware store and get a element wrench and that didn,t work,to much slop, tried to round off the shoulder"s had to order a 6 point 11/2 socket, then I could not bring it out was so tight, walked up street to get my neighbor and one holding in on the ratchet with a extension on it. the other pulling was all could do to break it and unscrew it, so 3 days of frustration its out.
JohnDoe, sorry to hear about your struggle to get the heating element out. I had a very similar experience in trying to remove a 7 year old element from a 10 gallon Suburban water heater. I ended up getting the flimsy socket made for the job, but I couldn't push in and get anything to grip the socket tight enough to turn it. I ended up tack welding a 1 1/4" pipe nipple and cap to the socket then tack welding a nut to the pipe cap. With this arrangement I could push in and use my 3/4" socket breaker bar and it came out with a sufficient amount of force.
