Well i am not running with the big dogs-but I am running

I am running 15 inch E rated Titans. I suppose that maybe titan has the big ones in 16 but I don't know.

I lost the D rated Marathons with a lot less weight than that.

I would be suspect that that heavy of a trailer did not come with those smll of a load range tire. I had a stealer try to sub in a C rated once.

I don't want to "blow my own horn" so to speak, but I have 5 "G" rated tires and wheels listed for sale on rv.net here.

SH --- I do have 16" rims.

If I go with the G rated tires---will the 16" rims I have not work? If not, why? What's wrong with them?

On buying tires and rims on the Internet---never did it before. Who installs/mounts the tires to the rims? Pep Boys? Who?

Thanks,

Jeff

wheels have different pressure ratings. Your 16" wheels should be pressure rated to 80 psi. There on your trailer so you will have to be the one to check them for their pressure rating. Pressure rating can be a decal or indentation stamped somewhere on the wheel, inside or outside. If your trailer came with factory D rated (65 psi) going to G rated (110 psi) may not be necessary. Going to a LT235/85-16" E tire will give you 12380 lbs of capacity, minus the pin weight, which will be about the most your trailer will weigh on the tires. The XPS Rib will handle max weights just fine even for trailer use. They are much more reliable than any of the G rated tires for long term use.
I use etrailerpart.com when ordering trailer wheels or I also use a implement trailer manufactor in my area for trailer wheels.

Jim

What Jim said! Also remember to use a metal valve stem with the higher PSI rims. I bought rims HERE

Best of luck!

Thanks for all your info, folks.

Believe it or not, for those asking, Carriage DID put these D Marathons on at the factory. Believe me, the dealer I bought this rig from was cheap as all can be. He'd never have lifted a finger in labor costs to have swapped anything---even if it were profitable to him because he WAS that stupid!

The 34' Carriage Compass says on the placard that this coach is 11,759 lbs. empty. Trust me, my "stuff," just normal dishes, kids toys, etc. can not weigh the additional 4,000 lbs. I've weighed the trailer at a certified weigh station.

What I've gotten out of this discussion is that my trailer should never have matched up these D tires with this weight. Fortunately, I'm parked for awhile. I hope I don't have another blow out, as I now had no spare. You guys got me concerned that if I tow the trailer down to get new tires, they're going to explode!

I'll get some new ones in a couple of months and tow the trailer early in the morning when it's cooler 15 miles to get some new XPS or equivalent tires.

Thanks,

Jeff

You learned what I did last year. D rated Marathons might be great on a lighter trailer, but they won't cut it on the heavier fivers running in the summer.
I went through three with large bubbles on the sidewalls. Caught it before the blow out. Now I'm running E rated Maxxis.

I had a 04 Carriage Cameo F34 CK3 that came with Goodyear Marathons, 16", D rated. We had a side wall blow out like yours and a second tire was starting one. I put the Michelin Ribs on that were E rated and never had another problem. By the way the current F34 Ck3 now comes with E rated tires but they are made in China.

I have a 3-year-old Carriage Compass 5th Wheel. Never any major issues. I've been parked in my space for about two weeks. A few hours ago I hear a "boom" (believe me, scare the******out of you if you've never experienced it) and then a big "hiss" sound.

I went outside to discover my driver-side wheel (one behind the first) tire was flat. After inspection, a big hole burst on the Goodyear D-Rated Tires that came with the rig. Only have about 3,000 or so miles on these tires---been good for the 15,000 lb. trailer.

Anyone have any ideas other than a tire defect that would cause the sidewall to burst on the tire while parked? It is hot in Reno, NV, where I'm at for now at 95 degrees today and the tire was on the sun side.

THANK GOD for joining Good Sam Emergency Tow Service---WORTH EVERY PENNY of the $100 a year---cost me nothing!

Guy wrangled for an hour to get my spare tire off underneath---weird contraption that Carriage had for the spare tire holder the guy never saw before.

What gives? Old tires? Dried out? I've never "covered them" like I see people do (that only stay for a day or two---seems like a hassle and waste of time) and I've never stored the trailer---been full-timing in it for the past two years. The tires are 2005---dealer had the unit on his lot for a year before I bought it.

I'm giving "all these little details" to avoid posts asking for this information.

My rig is well-maintained and there aren't any air bubbles (like I saw a day ago on that tire) on the other three tires---they look fine. I knew something was wrong with the tire with the air bubble I saw. If you saw the tire, you'll see the sidewall just separated (THANK GOD we weren't driving the rig) and a huge hole about a quarter size in the tire. I didn't run over anything---tire looks defected.

Anyone know why? (Again, tried to avoid people's responses asking all the above questions I see them ask when someone asks a question)

Thanks, for anyone's expert tootleage,

Jeff
Like others stated over load of the tire. When you saw the bubble you Knew you were in Trouble ,the side wall was broken and let the air between the outside of the tire and the center of the ply the air increased and bubble bot bigger and bigger until it blew out ,course over load the other three are just waiting to do the same ,dont chance it get new heave duty wheels and tires to carry the load of 15000 lbs or more at the speed you travel ,hitting a pot hole could cause the same thing and any tire ,you have to check often ,SEE a bubble you have trouble . I am now going into season seven with the same tires on our 5er. They are Goodyear Wrangler HT 235/85/16 M&S Load Range E as came stock on the new Fox 27-5L. They have less than 25,000 miles on them and look new — both tread and sidewalls. But they have always sat in covered storage for seven months out of the year. I am told that they should be replaced because of age and storage time. What's your opinion. We travel at the going Interstate speeds here in the West and in hot weather. I am inclined to replace them — but wonder whether I am being foolish. BTW, I would put the same tires back on since they have been outstanding. Will cost almost $800 total to replace them.

I think 5 to 7 years are the limit on tires regardless of milage. check your dot date on the side of the tires.

Have done some more checking. DOT is Late February, 2002. Major Goodyear dealers in our area (commercial) have told me not to replace them unless they have signs of fatigue. They say that age alone is not a sufficient criterion. Soooooo, these tires have less than 25K on them and in their 6 years have been on the road for less than 2 years. Stored under cover on dry gravel. I have no problem replacing them — just don't want to be a fool about it (either way).
