My first fiver didn't have them and I installed topper's for many obvious reasons. The coach I now own doesn't require toppers because the mfg. engineered the slideouts so as not to require them. Interesting don't you think?

We have a Cruiser with the toppers and have never had water come in as we retract the slides. Personally, we would not be without toppers. YMMV

Never have had water come in when retracted and topper was wet or had a pool of water on it. I highly recommend them. They help keep the top of the slide out clean. I've also had no real problems in high wind. I want to know about the posters 5er above that has been engineered to where the slideouts don't need toppers...how does that work?? Fascinating. Your money will be well spent if you purchase the slide toppers.

Not only will pooled rain not get into the interior, sleet and snow can build up on the s/o awning and it will fall off as the s/o is closed. Without the awning, you risk damage to the seals or s/o, climbing on the slick roof to remove the ice buildup, or waiting for warmer weather.

I don't have slide-out awnings but I wouldn't mind having one on the bedroom slide-out because it would diminish the sound of rain hitting the metal roof of the slide. The noise keeps me awake...it's NOT soothing, although others think it is.

That being said, I don't mind getting up on my step ladder and brushing off the slides before retracting them. I'm tall and can reach them easily. A fellow RVer I met in WA last year had slide awnings on all his slides and told me he didn't really like them. According to him, leaves and other junk still found their way onto the slides and he had to maneuver a broom between the awnings and slide with some difficulty in order to brush them clean. I guess it's a case of: some love 'em and some don't. To each his own...

I skimmed the posts so excuse me if I repeat some theme's -

Negative:

I didn't get these on my prior trailer with a slide

Positive:

-No water, debris or other junk on the slideout roof
-Reduces some of the heat by blocking the direct sun from beating down on the slide roof.
-Protects the seals from water intrusion
-The Carefree of Colorado model's come with a wind baffle cover to reduce the "buffeting" in high wind, it also looks more finished then the Dometic A&E models (IMHO).
-I camp at a seasonal with a ton of pine trees. The awning keeps ALL pine spills off the actual roof and away from the seals. This means NO pine pitch to remove from the slide roofs.

I am very happy with ours, I have two of them. There is enough pitch that only the heaviest rain causes some pooling. You can simply draw in your slide, it will drain the water and put the material taut again.

PS- I really like that Cruiser and we are hoping maybe sometime next year to get the trailer you are looking at.

Yes, by all means. We've never been sorry we installed them.

My DW and I are wanting to order a Cruiser CF32BL from RVWholesalers. We don't know if we should get the slideout awnings or not. There would be three of them for the three slideouts on the CF32BL.

Here are the negatives we've heard:
-They get dirty from mold/mildew
-They "flap" in the wind
-They can pool water on them and when the slideout is brought in, the water can come into the interior

Postives are:
-They protect the slideout by keeping debris off the top of the slideout
-They keep the RV cooler

If the awnings are worth it, and will help protect our investment, then we definitely will order them. If they're not, then it's money we can save.

Thanks!!!

You hit the nail on the head with those pros and cons. (except for the part about water running in as you bring the slide in.) I have them. I believe they keep trash off the slide roof and water away from the seals, reducing the chance for leaks. But, your observations are dead on. This is a 100% personal preference and I can see both sides.
