Having left the "family camera" with my ex-wife during my recent divorce, I find myself wanting to start compiling my own record of travels.
Can some of you folks suggest a good SIMPLE camera probably in the $250-$300 price range?
What am I looking for in a new camera..? "Spur-of-the-moment, self-focus, point and click", thats about all. Ansel Adams I'm not...
Thanks much for any help....enjoy the journey

Canon Powershot 720 IS - auto focus - point and shoot - great shots every time. Only uses two batteries vs. four in some of the others. I have one and really enjoy it.

You might want to look at the Kodak FunSaver, single use camera which is about as simple as you can get.

While you are looking at cameras , talk with folks who are using and storing photos. An inexpensive digital will take great pictures and then your fun can really begin. You can edit them , email them , print cards ,etc. Storage is one lession I am learning after saving a dozen or so media cards. You can keep them in the computer but external storage will be best in the long run. Your own interests can lead you into all kinds of activities. And folks are impressed with your creativity that they never knew you had ( nor did you ).
Start with an inexpensive camers and then move up.

I use Picasso 2 to download my pictures and organize them. It's free and does a really good job.

There are tons of simple cameras (digital) available that will do the job and do it well. You can get one with lots of megapixels and big zoom range from major manufacturers for well under $500. I have a Canon Digital Rebel (fairly large) and a Canon A560 (shirt pocket size, literally). My wife has a Kodak 6490 (bigger than my A560 and smaller than my Rebel). I'd suggest going to some place like Best Buy and see and handle their selections, look at prices and features so you can get a handle on what you want/need/price point and then decide.

Ohhh, I just went that route of buying a new camera.
And 'only' because the Olympus Camedia I had, that had 'nothing' wrong with it other than the fact that they won't allow you to transfer the software to a new computer. Nice catch to get you to buy a new one.
First of ALL the info tags under each camera are DESIGNED to confuse you so you can 'not' compare each camera easily, this really ticked me off.
The big one is that the Cannon does not have memory storage capabilities, like all the rest. It took me 20 minutes to get the clerk to confirm that one.
I spent over 2 hours trying to decifer what each camera had to offer.
I ended up buying the Olympus Fe-330. 8.0 pixels, 5x zoom.
Easy to use and a nice big screen and a lot of extra features.
What a great camera! I spent all last night playing around with it taking pictures of the campfire in the middle of the night and what fun being able to take night pictures that come out perfectly!

We bought a Fuji. A huge consideration was that it uses AA batteries, as opposed to the various expensive power cells found on some other brands. Takes great pics too. YMMV

I agree with LipDawg...make sure your new camera uses "AA" bateries.
I use a Cannon and the AA batteries last a long time.
