Most of the Owens River in the Owens Valley is part of the city of LA's water shed and has signs saying day use only. No canping. I don't know of anywhere you can camp there. There is a campground just north of Bishop right on the river at Pleasant Valley however. There might be something above crowley lake, I don't know for sure.

The Owens above Crowley Lake is all open range and at any given time/place will be groups of cattle....which of course means lots of cow patties.

The only place I'm aware of (above Crowley Lake) is Glass Creek which is about 5 miles north of the Mammoth Lakes turn off. However, it is pretty popular during the summer months and can be quite dusty at times.

Pleasant Valley (as John mentioned above) is a pretty good place, but is also crowded during the summer months. It is located just north of Bishop before you start Sherman's grade.

South of Bishop and between there and Lone Pine are numerous state park campgrounds situated on just about every creek that flows out of the Sierras...take your choice as they are all about the same.

Hope this helps

Last May I stayed at Horton Creek CG (BLM) about 10 miles north of Bishop. Owens River would be across hwy 395 from it. Rather primitive CG, but with a beautiful view. Was $5 last year. Here's where it is:

Taboose Creek Campground is a DWP owned camp that is primitive buy very nice. It is on the west side of US 395 in between the towns of Independence and Big Pine. Also check the small café in the Aberdeen trailer park. Also along any of those dirt roads on the East side of 395 are great to boon dock on. Most land is DWP land but nobody is ever out there.

Here is a link to camping on LA DWP land in the Eastern Sierra. Brown's is right on the river.

Goodale is my favorite Eastern Sierra BLM camp. Not on the river, but there's a stream right through camp that some people fish in.
