I have a new Dell 1520 laptop loaded with XP home addition. I have loaded only a few programs, Microsoft Office 2000, Firefox and Thunderbird, Quickbooks and an HP printer. We just returned from a trip where I used the laptop for the first time and the computer is typing in slow motion. When I type a word in email or Word, the word does not appear on the screen while typing but will jump on the screen few seconds later. It will drive you nuts trying to type here on the forum or in an email.

Ha anyone else run into this problem? Dell wants to take the computer back to factory specs but I am hoping to solve the problem without going through that. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you

This is probably little help but I bought DW the same laptop recently. I just asked her if she had noticed that happening and she said "You know, I think it did that yesterday". I asked her to pay attention now and I will let you know if it does.

The "name brand" computers and laptops come with so much junk preloaded on them that it is probably dragging your resources down.

Companies pay to have their software preloaded and automatically run at startup.

Boot into safe mode and see if the problem goes away. If so, it is likely there is too much stuff running at start up. (Then go to the add/remove programs and uninstall all the stuff you don't need/want.) If it does not go away, then it is something hardware and you will need to visit the store where you purchased it as you may have a bad unit.

But whatever you do... Don't give up XP for Vista. Vista sucks. But that is a whole other discussion.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replay. I ordered the Dell with NO software loads except XP. I have already run Startup Manager and deleted all of the unnecessary programs running in the background on start up. I started the computer in Safe Mode the other day and no change on the slow typing.

I ordered this computer directly from Dell and had it custom configured with XP. I bought a Vista laptop for my wife, and your are correct, it sucks! That is why I bought the Dell as they will still load XP on a new computer.

All great ideas and I have tried all of them. I appreciate your feedback. I was just on HP's web site and the printer I loaded DOES have some issure with Dell laptops. I am going to try uninstalling the printer and see if that helps.

Thank you,
Chuck

Did you look to see if a defrag, or Defender or Virus scan was running in the background? Watch the Disk light to see if something is going on there at the time. If you have Norton running, it has caused many people issues. If so, turn it off and see what happens.
I have Vista and it's probably the best OS I have worked on going back to Dos 1.1
Every thing I have had on XP works and believe me, that was a lot of software, printer, mouse, Wifi.

Install a different printer (even if you don't have one) and set it as your default. (This may save you from uninstalling the current printer.)

I know that I have an issue with Photoshop loading really slow when I have my network printer set as my default.

No, no! DOS 3.0 rocked! LOL! I loved the DOS days.

Seriously, if you are using Vista with no issues, you are one of the select few. But I digress, as I stated, Vista is a whole other discussion.

I sure appreciate all of the feedback and help. I have tried everything I know of and it is still typing in slow motion. I have restored back to 2 months ago, uninstalled my printer, un-installed Microsoft Office, turned off AVG and still the same problem. The only thing I can think of left to do is to let Dell take it back to factory default setting over the phone and see if that corrects the problem. If not I guess they will have to replace the computer. I sure hate the thought of re-loading the entire computer, but it useless this way.

Again, I really appreciate all of the help and things to try, and I tried them all. Any new ideas, I'm still open as Dell is not due to call me back until Tuesday so I have nothing to loose at this point.

I had the same problem with my new Dell Vostro 1700.
Very slow typing in everything, Word, Outlook, Excel, and all Internet response typing. I tried everything for weeks, no improvement.
I searched the web and found an article on an software application that was causing it. After reading the article I thought another snake oil fix and did not think it would make any difference.
I turned it off and problem solved. Now I can type as fast as I want with no delay at all. I have had no other system problems after turning off the application.
It is easily turned off by opening MS Config, clicking on the Startup tab and taking the tick off the PCMService.

for the record, you can order a HP with XP on it from the small business site, not from the regular home one, but I bought a Dell with XP myself about 2 months ago. IMHO Bill Gates released the beta version and the last service pack for Vista was essentially a whole new operating system, someone here has stated.
