Use the nuvi 350 daily, drive for a medical transport company all over the state and has allways found my locations. When in the TV, I set it to truck and keeps me on truck routes.

We bought the Garmin 650 and we almost always use it to go places that we havent been to before.
Maps are still valuable to confirm the route prior to starting the trip, and if there any glitches along the way where we might lose the satellite, or if the gps gets confused.
One of the unexpected benefits, is that my DW finds navigation very challenging and she has really improved by using the GPS. She also enjoys watching our progress on the GPS map. At any point during the trip, she can also determine how far to the next town, turn, or a new arrival time if we have taken a rest break.
I would unconditionally suggest a GPS, and one with a text to speech capability. The size of the screen isnt as important as I expected, since 95% of the time, text to speech directions are adequate for me to make the correct driving decisions. Lane directions in heavy traffic is also helpful, when we are in a large city on multi-lane freeways.

Have a Garmin we call roada (female voice). We use it a lot on our Goldwing trips cross country. My wife use to set behind me and navigate with a map. Have lost several maps this way and don't tell her but she is definitely map challenged. Roada saved our marriage.

I bought a Garmin several years ago -- around 2000. My wife, who is... ummm... technically challenged, couldn't figure it out, and if I did anything with it while driving I got scolded. I sold it on eBay.
My son has one factory-built into the dash of his GM car. I really like it. If I could get something like that I would... or at least try to talk the boss into it.

We have the Garmin 7200 in our TV and would not be without it or a similar unit. We've loaded it with 10 CDs of our favorite music, points-of-interest (POIs), and routes. DW performs the navigating duties and monitors my mph on the Garmin-- the fun of having the DW 'monitoring' our trip!

Have had experience with three, laptop, palm pilot and TomTom.
TomTom is much easier and more flexible.
Laptop is good, but, highly dependent on the software. MS (Roads and Maps?) is probably better at planning routes. Gives a lot of flexibility in planning trips. I did not like it as much when hooked up to the GPS. Seemed to not keep up at times. DeLorme Street Atlas is very good when hooked up to the GPS but is a pain for planning routes. I have found a few tricks to make it reasonable so use it the most.
Palm Pilot with the DeLorme software. Very time intensive and it is slow. Takes forever to find a new route. I use it while on business trips since all I have to bring along is the small GPS unit (bluetooth version).
I love having one, but, won't go without a map either.

DW got me a Garmin 330 2 years ago and now we will not travel without it. My wife is the designated navigator which is a job she could not have done using a map. It has made travel easy from places to eat, fuel, camp and most importantly where is the next rest stop. The only negative is if you know exactly where you are going and how to get there. It may not take you on the same route.
Have a great travels.
