I have an 88 Honda Accord with over 150,000 towed miles on it with no problems anytime. I want to replace the 20 year old with another Honda - Civic. I know Honda will not tell you that their cars can be towed, but if you follow the proper proceedure before towing them, they work okay. I have heard that the newer Civics cannot be towed 4WD. Can anyone verify one way or another.

I have been towing a 2005 Civic for two years with no problem. I change the transmission fluid every year to be on the safe side and because it is so easy to change. I didn't buy a 2006 model because at the time I had heard they had a different transmission and couldn't be towed. Since than I have heard of several people towing the newer models.

According to Honda the '05 model isn't towable either. I've verifed this numerous times with Honda too. The only '05 and newer models approved for 4 down towing is the CR-V and now the Fit.

But, any vehicle can be towed if you're willing to get it set up correctly or pay for the repairs when it fails.

Whether you can tow it has not been technically answered one way or another, but Honda does not endorse towing any of their cars except the CR-V, so if you choose to tow it you are on your own if the transmission goes.

Per the owner's manual, the 2008 Honda Fits are approved for four-down towing.

That's news to me! Does that include both manual and automatic transmissions?

Yep, The 2008 Fit automatic is approved for flat towing. I had decided to buy a Fit manual trans and when I got to the dealership this morning the salesman said the auto had been approved. Had him check the Honda literature to verify and also its clearly printed in the owners manual. So I order a Fit sport with auto, should be here in two weeks. I am planning to use the Ready Brute tow bar and ready brake system.

The current Fit is a bit tight (poor Fit?) for me. I might check it out when the revised 2009 Fit comes on the market.

We looked at the Fit, but for my wifes driving the Civic EX-L gets better mileage and the extra cost of the Hybrid won't ever pay off. I like the Fit but she has to have leather upholstery, although we could have it added to the Fit. Did that to our '95 Ody and it was fine, but expensive.

The dealer told me that in 09 no Honda is flat towable.
