I have a 04 Coachman 277tbs. The kids are gone and it's just me and the DW. We've been talking about getting a bus, but with the way gas is going and the economy issues; I think keeping the TT and making it work for us is the most practical way to go.

With that being said, I'd like to rip out the top bunk and create a closet in that area. I'd also like to rip out the cabinets at the front of the unit and make a walk around bed. Question; Does the bunk or the corner mounted cabinets add to the structural integrity of the unit? Since these things are mounted in corners, I wouldn't want take them out and all of a sudden the unit become unstable when pulling at hwy speed.

Appreciate any help or advice..Steve

i have a 2000 Jayco 25' and am just in the middle of a major reno. I have the entire front section tore apart right down to the framing. (rotten floor joist)
hard to say for sure of course, but i'd venture to guess yours is a box like anything else. depending on options the shell is essentially the same and derives it's structural integrity from the walls only. Now that being said you certainly want to make sure your siding and interior sheathing is all fastened properly because that's where the wall gets most of it's strength. I'd watch as i disassembled it for any movement as things were pulled free. once you had it stripped down to the shell apply some pressure near top of walls from outside. if trailer rocks a little without any wall flex i'd say your good to go. Don't pull out any walls or gables though. Our upper bunk just sat on aluminum angle. and came free easily. Again not sure if yours is as simple as mine, best to use your own judgement as to how well the thing was put together in the first place.

Good luck!

Did exactally what you are doing in our previous TT, a 2003 Coachman 24trb. We took out the upper bunk for easier access to the lower bed for our disabled daughter and I took out cabinets and the entire bed in the front and installed a futon and used the bedroom as a living room/bedroom.
The items you mentioned have nothing to do with the structual integrity of your RV.

Interesting discussion. We have triple bunks in our Rockwood 2306, and I've toyed with the idea of talking one out and relocating the upper bunk to even out the headroom between the two that remain. I just don't want then end reuslt to look all "hacked-up."
