We left Thursday around 5:30 for Bethpage and the State Good Sam's rally. 45 minutes out on 17 in Grafton/Yorktown I hit major stop and go traffic along with a couple of idiot traffic weavers and a really bad light cycle. Big mistake on my part to go down 17 (don't always listen to your GPS). If that wasn't bad enough I forgot to turn on the SMI brake system in my toad. Other than me getting impatient and wanting to stop and turn on the brake, there was no real problem until we got to the foot of the Coleman bridge. I made a stop and something smelled really bad. At the same time a motorcyclist yelled "you have a break dragging..I see smoke!" Then the ABS light came on.
I pulled over and the rear driver side dualies were hot as blazes. I didn't see smoke but I couldn't touch the inside wheel at all. Not being in a safe spot I drove another 100 yards to a pull off. We sat there for 4 hours making phone calls to AAA, Workhorse and the local WH service center trying to determine if we should and could get a tow back to Chesapeake before they closed. No luck. The tow truck did not know when they could get there and couldn't promise to tow it with the rear wheels up. I called my brother in law who used to own a tour bus company equipped with Prevosts. He said if the wheel is now cool, use your levelers and lift the rear till the wheels come off the ground and see if you can spin the tires without any problem. I did and I could. He said get out of there and head to the campground. Stop every ten miles and check for heat. Ignore the ABS light. I did and never had another problem. We pulled in around midnight with the help of a good friend who met us on the road and guided us in to the park. Once there a bunch of our chapter members helped us set up quickly so we could get some rest after a very long evening. We had a good time after that.
This moring we left with the ABS light on but the brakes worked fine coming home. I stayed on 33 to 64 so I could avoid all the lights on 17. I did notice a funny squeak coming across the rear camera mike as we left,.stopped and checked it while the wife slowly moved the coach forward. It seemed to be coming from the back center of the chassis not the wheels and it quit after awhile. Could be I was just being over sensitive to sounds. Anyway, it goes to the shop in the morning to check it out.

It could be something like a failing rubber brake line, etc that is restricting bleed off after applying the brakes where hitting the brakes from time to time it gets bleed off before causing a lot of drag but not when hitting them all of the time. I hate to get the MH in stop and go traffic. I often do go to a lower gear and just pace the lights/traffic to keep off the brakes. Trucks do this all of the time and it really saves fuel and the machine not hit the brakes or come to complete stops because starting again requires a lot of energy vs. keeping rolling however so slow. Motor cycles do this for another reason.
Using brakes never improves gas mileage for some reason.

I use an IR gun every time I stop, looking for abnormal temps on tires, wheels and rear differential.
With an IR gun you might have been able to spot something like you had before it got real bad.
My 2004 W22 lost the rear seals on the drivers side at about 29,000 miles. You may want them checked also while they are checking out your problem.
Let us know what the shop discovers.

Yes, Gramps, please do let us know of the findings. I have not had a problem with my W-22, but its always good to have a heads up on something like this.
Hopefully this is just a one off incident and not a systemic problem.

Yhis is an on going problem over on the IRV2.com Workhorse Forum.
Also, you need to report this to NHSTA... There is a NHSTA # EA07016 investigation.
Lastly, the ABS sensor attachment wires have probably melted.

I will let everyone know what the shop finds out. The Workhorse tech I spoke to this morning thinks that at this point the only real trouble is the abs sensor will need to be replaced. He said if nothing more obvious is found to be wrong, I should still have all the brake slides and pins cleaned and lubed. He said this should be done once a year. Seems that inactivity causes moisture to build up in the brakes and then you have rust and grit and other bad things that should be cleaned out. I have not had any brake service done and now with 26,000 miles it seems like a good time to have them worked on.

I believe they (Workhorse) have a bad problem with caliper pins sticking and causing the pads not to release. This causes the brakes to rub and get too hot. As a safety issue for you - I would also worry about the discs being cracked or warped from the overheating. The fluid might have been boiled also since they were smoking. I wonder why they have so much trouble with their brakes. You hear about Workhorse brake problems all the time.

Had problems at 3600 miles with my w-22 brakes. Replaced 3 calipers and rotors. Smelled brakes once since then and found pressure in master cylinder while removing cap. Reported all to NHSTA.
