Had rig into the truck tire place to fix slow leak in outside dual(was a nail)so had thorough inspection on 235/80/22.5 XRV's (Six years old no cracks). Tires still good to go, but got antsy about the inflators so had the solid brass long stems installed on the inside tires only cost us $35 to fix the leak and $58.50 for installing the stems. I can reach them with a straight in-line gage and inflator right thru the holes in the wheel-liners, and the outside tires with the angle part of same tools. As for managing the valve-stem caps I can reach them by either reaching in between the tires or using a 3/8" nut driver(caps are hex-shaped). Feel much safer now, had to remove inflators from previous motorhome because of leaks. Richard

PS Have 40,000 miles on these 6 year old tires and have always kept them covered, so will go for another year then take another hard look. R.

Hu,

I also had inflators that where leaking slowly, so I got rid of mine as well.

I was thinking that the ZIP inflators sold at camping World would work better, so I tried them. Well they leaked as well. So I removed the wheel liners when I want to check the inside wheel tire pressure.

I was not able to find the right tire stems to fit my RV rear inside tires yet. Anyone know where to get the stems for a F-53 chassis with 16" rims?

Fred.

I've been using the stainless steel braided valve extenders for 5 years with out any problem. Rarely do I need to add air to any tire.

I just replaces my 5 year old Michelin 235/80R22.5 XRVs with GoodYear G670 275/70R22.5. I never had any problems with the Michelins - just never felt very comfortable with all the zipper blowouts they are famous for. With the GoodYears I can drop my pressure from 100 to 90 psi and have 1000 pounds more of load capacity then the Michelins.

I know, any tire does not increase the load capacity of the axle. But just the same now I'm not anywhere near the load capacity of my tires like I was with the Michelins.

I havent had any problems with SST hoses in more than 14 years of using them ( NOT the same identical set though)

What REAL problems did you have with your extenders?

I was losing about 6 psi per week and took the rig to the shop. Turned out the braided hoses were leaking. The tire guy said that in his experience the life span on the braided hoses are about three years. They were out of the braided hoses so I asked about using solid extensions. He recommended not using them because he's seen them get snapped off by debris getting between the tires. I guess it's a toss up and there's no perfect solution.

I got rid of mine due to leaking also. I have the hex valve caps and made a long tool by welding a 3/8" socket to the end of a piece of steel rod and putting a "T" handle on the other end.

Now to add air I remove the cap (with the homemade tool) and screw on one of the old long braided extensions to the valve stem. Add or remove air as needed and remove the braided extension and reinstall the cap. Easier than laying down and reaching between the tires and no need to remove wheel liners.

I felt uncomfortable with the amount of pressure I had to put on the valve stem when pressing the guage directly on the stem and was worried about breaking/bending the stem.

Fred, have you looked at GEMPLER'S?. They have a pretty good selection.

I use their straight metal extensions on my inside duals, with Loctite grade C.
