We start with balling up 3 or 4 sheets of news paper. Then toss a small pile of twigs on, add some say 1 to 2 inch pieces and then pyramid the big stuff over it. Makes a great fire every time.

The way I start a camp fire is first to make some kindling, small wood and quartered wood. I also use some sawdust or shavings. I crumple up some news paper and sprinkle it with dust or shavings. Then I make a teepee or log house over the paper, then teepee or log house the small wood over that. Light and let catch good. Then add the quartered wood. Once it is going good a add what I call me heart log. It is usually a long burning wood like popular that hold the coals well and just add wood as needed.

I'm an old Eagle Scout. There is only one way to start a fire. Kindling and ONE match. Seriously.

To this day, it's still a fun challenge to build and start a fire anywhere and anytime it's needed with nothing more than simple kindling and ONE match.

Of course, if it's raining out, and most of your wood is wet or damp, certain concessions can be made. I'll still use ONE match,(if necessary), and one of these!

I completly agree! I refuse to use paper (I hate the smell for one thing) or firestarters. I like you love the challenge and I guess kind of boast that I can light a fire anywhere any time. I really don't mean that boastfully but do pride myself in the fact that I can make fire. I have lit fires in pouring rain with char cloth and flint and steel. You just have to know what to look for and how to do it. I work with the Royal Rangers. We had a canoe trip this past weekend. On Friday afternoon I had two fires going in less than 10 minutes in the rain. I found everything within 50 feet of where I was. When working with the boys we do not let them have paper. The get some tinder (match stick size and smaller), Kindling (finger size) and some larger fuel for when they get it going. Try it! It will make you feel good.

A rule of thumb with the tinder and kindling, "If you can't snap it, scrap it". It's got to be dry. I won't go into alot of detail but it's out there no matter what the weather is doing.

I found a box of the duraflame firestarters about two years ago. Must be around 20 of them in there about four inches by an inch roughly in a flammable metallic looking package. One of those under a little kindling and you are in business gauranteeed...

I'm an Eagle Scout too. I learned how to do the one match thing when I needed it. If our scoutmaster wasn't looking, we helped the process along by spraying insect repellent over a lit match. It makes a great blowtorch but don't try this at home!

I can still get a fire going with one match, but if time is short and I'm trying to cook for the family, I'll use the Duraflame starters. They never fail.

Eagle scout here too. I keep the bags from our paper shredder and use them to start the fire umder sometinder and kindling, and a teepee stack of 2" pieces. addon a few larger logs once it gets going. It also helps to get rid of the "important documents" completly.
