I learned to take a cotton ball and put it in vaseline. It will burn hot and for quite a while. It will even start wet wood very well. Always have some with me in backpack when hunting already to go in case something bad happens.

Yes, they work well! Pack in ZipLock.
I have always heard the various liquid fuels called Boy Scout Water.

I knew there had to be a use for all those old "TAX Forms"

We use the small fire starter-logs sometimes, but in wet weather our best tried and true method of starting a fire is by using cotton balls slathered with Petrolum Jelly. They work great. They even start up a great fire in the snow. See below when we used them to start our campfire during one of our Girl Scout camp-outs:

We have used dryer lint too.
BTW...you can find those 'funky flames' at Wal-Marts. I am not sure it is called that...but the same thing as what Camping World sells and cheaper.

The first time we went tent camping I didn't know about the firestarter "sticks". One of my girlfriends suggested I start with charcoal first (we used it to cook aluminum pouches) and then add wood. It was just me and the kids and my 10 yrs old son was not impressed by my small camp fire and kept mumbling "That's not a fire". He kept wanting to add pine needles to it, but I can't stand the way it smells.
Our 1st time out w/the PUP I was still using the "charcoal method" and had cooked then started our roaring fire (much improved from previous attempts) and one of our neighboring PUP wife's came over to ask how I had started our fire as her DH couldn't get theirs going. I told her how and I heard another neighbor say, "Yeah, but that's cheating!" Both families came over and did s'mores at our place. lol
Now I use the firestarter sticks. Use no more than 3 depending on wet wood. Always have a roaring camp fire and my son has stopped complaining.
It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature's gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever.

Another Eagle Scout here and I also get it started with hand chipped kindling carefully placed to build heat onto larger sticks and finally the logs. One match is always the goal.

I did it too and it was the oooh and ahhhh's that made me tell everyone I got the tip from here.
I wonder if a larger pipe and more hose would be better.. I used 1/2 inch pipe.
