I seem to have lost my ABS on my truck, I noticed the amber 'ABS' and the red 'Brake' warnings on the dash turned on while driving.
Brakes are good, just no more ABS. I did notice now when I turn the start key to 'on', I no longer hear the typical 'clunk' sound which I now realize was part of the ABS selftest.
Any ideas before I end up at the dealer ? Fuses are good, all sensor wiring appears OK.
Thanks

Is your speedo working correctly? The easy cause could be the speed sensor in the rear end housing. Beyond that, a code reader may be needed.

According to several Dodge forums (googled '98 CDT 3500 Ram No ABS) it seems the wheel sensors are a common problem with this vehicle. I would suggest taking it to a qualified service center that can read the "code" and find out what it is. I had a 2000 VW Passat (I think they missed a few letters in this name!) and had several check engine lights, or what I called the "$500" light come on as well as the ABS light twice! After replacing the first $500 module, the next time I took it to the VW dealer which was the only place that could read a VW code and paid them $90 to hook it up and give me the code. I then went on-line and found the second and third $500 module for $75 and $150 both with a 5 year warranty. The dealer wanted $500 and only a 90 day warranty. When the ABS light came on, once again, $90 indicated is was an ABS Vacuum module block and they wanted $1500! I found a remanufactured one for $150 guaranteed for 5 years and put it in myself. Get an estimate...search the Dodge forums.

The sensor in the rear end is a common failure on that vintage of Dodge.

Thanks for the replies and info. Yes, my speedo is fine, I'm aware that the rear sensor is common from another forum, I physically checked the connection, but could not do more than that. It seems as if the C.A.B. controller is just dead, and I did not think that would be caused by a single wheel sensor alone (I no longer have that 'Thump' sound, I took the C.A.B off and I can clearly see six electro-mechanical type solenoids inside, I think that's where the thump comes from during self-test)
I will probably buy a DRB scan tool and read the stored code so I'll have a heads up on the dealer. If it's the C.A.B, I can't just replace it because it needs to be programmed for my truck first, I know these problems can be costly.
Thanks again to all, I'll post the fix after I find it.

If the rear sensor failed, would'nt the speedo no longer work ?

My 2000 did the same thing and it was the rear speed sensor. Very easy to change.
