We did the same trip 2 years ago. Go from Rushmore to Deadwood / Lead and then take Spearfish canyon to Spearfish and I-90. This is a beautiful drive with 3 waterfalls in the area and several marked location where the filmed Dances with Wolves. We did not stay overnight at the tower, but then I like to drive at night. The tower is so awesome. Well kept and easy to walk around. Keep your vehicle on the road because of the prairie dogs. Everything must be hollow around there. Have a great trip

Ok., I thought you all were jacking with me. Whats up with the Prairie Dogs. Do they really try to get in your vehicle. I better not tell my kids that or they will leave the doors open and whistle for them

Don't miss it. Wonderful place to visit. The KOA right at the entrance is one of the nicest cgs I have stayed in. Make sure you take the hike all the way around and spend time in the visitor's center learning what it is all about. Definitely worth a visit.

on you walk around the base ...look for the wood stakes from the fence post that a rancher drove into the crevice and nailed together to build a fence ladder to become the first to climb it AND IT IS PARTLY still there!!!! Take binoculars or quarters for the peep show ones the park provides

Yeah, unlike mountainerring, rock climbing is about testing yourself against the rock, not reaching the summit.
Having said that, I've climbed the tower to the top 3 times (and played on several other routes). One of those climbs was during the Sturgess Harley rally. It's cool to listen to the Harleys rumbling down the road while sitting on a ledge 500 feet up the tower.

Good point. Lots of interesting history here to find out about. Start with the Indian ledgend about a bear creating the tower. And the guy who parachuted to the top, then couldn't get back down.
Interesting stuff.
