The best SOS I got in the Navy was always with chipped beef. Otto had the great chowder so I am thinking he has great SOS too. I am here to help Otto. David G, once you have good SOS you will be hooked for life. Going on midwatch it always made my watch when we went to the gally and there was SOS with good burnt toast waiting for us.

Ryan,I'd love to go to Mossyrock,but we're going to Tahoe the next weekend to celebrate Ryan's grandpa's 90th.We've driven thru there and it's really a nice place.. We didn't get a chance to go thru it,but I heard that Alder Lake CG is being let run down..That's also a very nice place..

I guess I'm showing my age, but the only SOS we had when I was in the Navy was the red with ground beef, the chipped beef on toast was called something else, I can't devulge that here, but it was not called SOS. Of course you have to remember that I was a fleet sailor, stationed on a ship and we were in a somewhat different world then the other services or the shore-duty sailors.

Mopargo, I know exactly what it was called but there was no way I was going to post it here. We would be banned for life from the forum if we did. I dont think the people today in the Navy have any idea, as they are so politicaly correct.
Believe me guys, S.O.S. when applied to culinery context does not stand for "help" or "I'm in distress". If you search the net, they are not as PC as this forum. You will see it called what it is.
Whoever started this PC thing anyway-sure wasn't a Navy guy.
Chuck, as bad as some of the food got overseas, our SOS was just as good in Thailand or Viet Nam as it was while in Oak Harbor.

Bob, I figured that you went back far enough to know the correct terminology, Otto, the SOS was always good and we had it every Thursday morning. Generally the chow aboard the carrier was alright, ketchup and hot sauce can cover most things.
S.O.S. Is and still is the most loved comfort food in all the service's. Just know one will admit to the fact they like S--t on a Shingle. I think the Navy had the best, Army and Air Force was the same. I was station with all the service's.
That was about the only time I would get up for chow. The day we were having SOS.
So, I'll bet my last dime, The morning we were to have good old real to God SOS all the X G.I. will be there with their Tin Plates.

When I was in the AF,SAC,the best chow was when we were on alert and everybody,officers and enlisted,ate in the same chow hall at the same time so the food was always good.We could get real omelets in a pan like I cook now and the biscuits and gravy at Goose Bay AFB were the real sausage red gravy ones as the mess sargent was from the south..When not on alert at Dover,we would put on our flight suits and go to midnight chow and that was usually cooked to order.
I remember once in basic when we were on KP once and had to clean the grey paint off the stainless tables in the dining area,someone had had them painted to match the regular ones,and we mixed hot sauce and coke or Dr pepper and poured it on the paint and let it sit for a bit and then wiped it off with steel wool...Must not work on cast iron as I still use hot sauce and drink coke.
P.C. ? Not me! You're either young, old, skinny, fat, tall, short, and it's all relative to me! So to some of you (very few), I'd be a young, tall, fat guy with a hairly lip. Okay, maybe I'm not that fat, but compared to some of you skinny people I am.
Oh, and Laura, she wants to check the "native american" box on job applications cuz she figures if she was born here in the U.S., so that makes her a native and an american.
