How far North are you coming? You said to Oregun How far into Oregun are you coming? There are lots of hills and curves on Hwy101 that will slow you down. As long as you are not in a big hurry it is fine. From Brookings to Reedsport is a nice drive. In fact that is my preferred route to Brookings for one of my customers. But you still have to be aware that at every head land there will be a climb with lots of curves. And traffic gets pretty nasty the farther North you come.

Hi.

I to have been following the HWY 1 or 101 thread fore several week's now.

I will be making to same route. Just starting a little further south, El Cajon, Ca. 20-Jun / 20-Jul.

I made this run in 1997 w/ a 23' FW, this time it will be w/ a 31' FW.
The driver is in for a work out.

I made the run through downtown S.F. from Felton, Ca. near Santa Cruz. Don't remember just how I got to the Golden Gate Bridge. But! I did it. My wife ploted the route then, using "'94 version of trip maker".
The road I was on had some problems: Biker w/surfboards, parked car in right lane "No Parking" signs posted, people stop in the lane to hold conversation with sidewalk occupant's.

The road on the north side of G.G. was somewhat narrow and curve. You will find several grove's of tree's growing near or over the roadway.

There is one tunnel on this road in Oregon, R/S clearance is marked at 10.0'. Several have hit this area in the pass. Center height? You will need to crowd the center W/L. Hope there isn't any vehicle in tunnel at that time. I wasn't that lucky! I waited for a clear opening. Not sure what part of Oregon coast the tunnel is located at? I'll know after this trip.

Have a great trip!

Will you want to take that big rig through San Francisco streets on 101 and across the Golden Gate bridge, or around the bay and cross back over to 101 north of the city? If through the city, how about 3 or 4 am?

No problem at all with going through the City at any time of day. If you take the 19th Ave route it is very straight forward and easy, there might be heavy traffic, but that's life in the big city. This route is used by RVs, trucks, buses and other large vehicles daily. 3 or 4 AM is needless, unless you like to travel at those hours.

We did it in the middle of the day last year. Good ride except for a few traffic lights.

The OP clearly asked about 101, very different from Hwy 1 that you describe. 101 has none of the tight problems on either side of the GGB, it is a MAJOR Hwy, not a twisty narrow road as you describe.
The misinformation that gets put out here lately must really get the OP confused and wonder if the trip is even worth it.
To the OP, please PM me if you would like more info and the route through SF on 19th Ave I described in an earlier reply. I grew up in a house that backed to 19th Ave, so I think I might have some good input.

More on this thought
Please use the pull off's and slow lane because you will be going slow.
Thanks

grades should not be a problem but many stretches of 101 are severely worn down and plan for a jaw rattling ride.
