Rebecca,
Bill and I have been paddling the Nanny(Nantahala) for over 25 years and still love it. We go in canoes but the rafters have a lot of fun too. There are several outfitters along the 8 miles of river and the ones in the center are usually cheaper. You can rent one and go by yourselves or go with a guide. I really don't think a guide is necessary unless you would feel more comfortable.

If you are alone they will put you in a raft with others when they have the room. The rafts usually hold 4-6 people. You can also rent a duckie or double duckie(inflatables) for 1-2 people.

The biggest outfitter in the area is the Nantahala Outdoor Center, just google them for rates, etc. They also run trips on the nearby Ocoee(think Olympics) and the Chattooga (think Deliverance).

If you would like any more info just let me know.

Here are some additional photos from our trip down the Pigeon River in early April. These three photos were taken in succession, one right after the other.

This was the best thing I did all last summer.. I was scared because of my size and weight but I was ready to do it again after it was over.

We have been rafting on the Nantahala River for about 20 years.
Don't let weight or age stop you.
We use Brookside cg.12$ We like to go without a guide also.
We stop and eat lunch too.You can get the best pizza on the river.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned how cold the water is.
It is 42 degrees. OMG it is soooo cold.

After you go through the first run you are in shock

We will be going in July.

If anyone is Charlotte, NC. Try the North Carolina National Whitewater Center. It is man made, but will give you a great ride! It was used for the Olympic Kayak trials a few weeks ago. They have Class I-III in one section and if you feel brave enough your guide will take you down the class IV and if I am not mistaken there may have been a class 5 stuck in there.
