We are heading to Yellowstone at the end of July. I figure it will take us 2 1/2 - 3 days driving. I was thinking of pushing it and trying to get to Cedar City, UT the first night. I wanted to get up in a little elevation because really anyplace we would stop before that is desert and will be really hot. After that, where should we stop the 2nd night? I was thinking of trying to stop just over the border in Idaho but not sure how really far that is. We should be able to make it to fishing bridge on the 3rd day.
We will be leaving from Coulter Bay RV park. I was hoping to push it again to Cedar City, UT and then home from there. My old concern with stopping before Cedar City on the way back is then having to stop after Cedar City and before home-- because its all desert and not where I want to stop in August.
Any suggestions?

We are going up the end of May from Vegas. However we do not travel far at all in a day. A good spot (so I was told ) in Idaho was Cowboy RV in Pocatello, ID. They have pull-thrus so you don't need to un-hook and full hook-ups for air. It is then approx 160 miles from there to West Yellowstone (Grizzly RV) where we will be staying. That is where we made reservations.

I think we will do the Cowboy RV park in Pocatello. My biggest concern is from LA to our first stop. Cedar City, UT is the closest place that probably won't be over 100 degrees. Cedar City is 441 miles from our house. Pocatello is 414 miles from Cedary City. I am trying to figure out if that is too much driving each day- and if it is, where else should we stay.

We are real slooow-pokes when it comes to driving. We take our time and enjoy. However we are full-time and have the time. Here is our schedule see if some works for you.
Las Vegas to Hurricane Ut - Sand Hollow SP - 143 miles
Hurricane to Provo - Lakeside RV - 248 miles
Provo to Pocatello ID - Cowboy Rv - 200 miles
Pocatello to West Yellowstone - Grizzly Rv - 160 miles
We then go thru the Tetons and Flaming Gorge before coming back down into Utah.
Flaming Gorge to Heber City UT - Heber Valley RV - 178 Miles
Heber City to Beaver UT - Beaver KOA - 192 miles
Beaver to Mesquite NV - Desert Skies RV - 140 miles
Back to Vegas before our next trip out.
Hoop this helps a little. As I said we really take our time and enjoy.
Travel safe. Janet

P.S You might consider coming out to Vegas your first night. Nice Rv Parks with full hook-ups etc then take off from there.

I think 441 miles in a day is doable. You'll have 2 long days of driving but the last day is only 160 miles. You can sleep in and take your time on the last day. When we go on long trips we leave at about 4:00 a.m. to beat the Boston Traffic. Once we are on the open road time goes by without much stress.
Have a good trip.

When we went in Sept. in the middle of a heat wave, our first stop from O.C. was St. George 381 miles (Temple View campground). Weather was ok. Next stop was Brigham City KOA 346 miles. The 3rd stop was Colter Bay 266 miles.
We were going to stop the first day in Cedar City but had problems and got rolling about 3 hours late. As it was we were beat by the time we hit St. George needed gas so decided to stay there. Cedar City is only another 60 miles or so if you would rather push on.
Have fun!

When we were younger we traveled as you are planning. My advice is to get up very early in the morning and stop when you can. You will have less traffic, and it will be cooler.

Per my previous post, St. George to Brigham City to Colter Bay were all pretty easy days of driving. We got into Colter Bay just after lunch. We like to leave a campground around 8 am and pull into one by 4:00. That usually beats the crowd stopping for the night and pretty much assures us a campsite. It also gives us a little "Miller Time" before dinner. That length of time pretty much works out to be a tank of gas for us as well.
