We are a couple from New Zealand, and have jsut purchased an RV online in Indiana.
We understand that when we register this vehicle we may have to pay sales tax in some states.
As we will be on the road and have no permanent address, what advice can you give us as to the best state to register it in, if that is possible. We have postal addresses of friends that we could use in 3 or 4 states.
We will be arriving in July to collect the RV, and will be travelling in the USA and Canada.
Thank you. Ian

Indiana was not a good choice for a purchase. They have a 7% sales tax. If you are able to establish domicile elsewhere and take out of state delivery, you might have a chance of avoiding that and the subsequent personal property tax, which is horrendous.
Actually, I am not sure how you would go about doing that after the fact. Indiana will fight to maintain their control of the transaction.
I really don't know how to advise you on this.

I would check into registering it in SD. Give these a look and see if they will meet your needs.

I think you will need an address. Call your buddies and see who has the lowest tax. The dealer may need to ship it and it might be a hassle compared to picking it up direct and just paying locally as would be proper.

Seems unlikely to me that you could get the dealer to ship it to South Dakota and do all the paperwork for less than 7%.

This is a transaction that is beyond the scope of a forum to answer properly. You need to consult a property attorney in what ever state you will be accepting title to the vehicle. Only they can really tell you what the laws say. As indicated, most states have different ways of dealing with out-of-state buyers. But out of country is another thing entirely and no one without experience in that can really help you. Wouldn't your State Department or Foreign Counsel have some sort of idea?

Wouldn't sales tax be levied when the trailer is registered with the DMV, similar to a car, and not when it is picked up? As a courtesy, dealers will register and collect sales tax for you if you live in that state. If you don't live in that state, they should not collect sales tax even if you pick it up youself.
Or do trailers work differently?

Normally if you buy from a dealer in Indiana they collect the sales tax. If you buy from a private individual, you will pay when you get the plates.
This document provides some insight into the Indiana terms. This is dated 2006, but I haven't heard of anything newer.

The best advice given here is to consult an attorney.
