I have a Troy built 5500w generator I started it up the other day and checked the voltage at the outlet. It read 130v. Question is if I hook the generator up to my tt will the 10 extra volts damage anything? I also do not see any sort of idle to bring the rpms down to lower the voltage output. I am thinking as soon as I put a load to it it should reduce the rpms thus reducing output viltage. Am I right?

I doubt that 130vac will harm anything. As soon as you load it should reduce the voltage some. I would turn everything off first, If you have a portable electric heater test it using the heater before hooking it to your trailer read the voltage

Check it under load, it should stabilize a bit. The electric heater is a good idea.

I found this link to some converter sales, and it shows a voltage tolerance of up to 130VAC.

When you load it, it will drop a little.

I had a Craftsman 4000EX a while back and it measured 129 VAC under no load. Running a 13,500 BTU A/C the voltage measured 121 VAC. As long as the voltage doesn't fluctuate too much, it should be OK.

As for the RPMs, I believe your type of generator must run at a constant 3600 RMPs in order to provide 60 Hz frequency required for AC appliances. So the RPMs shouldn't be dropping at all. If the RPMs are higher than 3600, the max RPM meeds to be adjusted by a qualified generator tech.

If after doing the heater test suggested above and the voltage drops some, I would get a simple analog volt meter that you can plug in to a receptacle in the RV and monitor the voltage under various loads.

You may be waking up the dead by using that generator in a campground. The generator would most likely work, but it may not have an approved spark arrestor, for use in most state, and Federal campgrounds, and may not be allowed if to noisy.

thank you for all of the replies. I do not plan on using in campground I mainly have the genny for hurricane purposes, races or boondocking.

seabeecamper, you are brave for posting about a genny that doesn't cost $1,000 on here. Most likely posting should have been in Tech issues for better response.

130V no load should be fine, voltage will drop some under load (unlike utility voltage which most cases won't drop much if at all) so should cause no harm.
