18,000 pounds? One of 2 things:

1. Your scale is wrong

2. Your definition of a "fine job" is different than mine.

Unless you have made major mods to your drive train, brakes and suspension, you are way over the limit.

Certified CAT Scales?
Way over what limit? If you go look at Ford's Tow Boss package, I've got a GVWR of 13,000 lbs, a tow rating of 18,100 lbs and a GCWR of 26,000 lbs with my truck. I'm within the limits of the stock truck as it was designed and rated by Ford.

Sorry. Missed the part where you had a 2006. Guess you missed the part where I have a 2004. My tow rating is 12,900. I have no trouble pulling my trailer; but, when I move up to 11,500 I am worried about pulling 7% grades (I take numerous trips out west and will be traveling to Alaska in 2009). That is why I am considering upgrades.

I would just do the exhaust and intake. That will give you a little more HP and torque for towing. It will also lower your EGT's a bit too. I would stay away from programmers/chips, that seems to be when everyone starts have issues with the 6.0 engine. Everyone I know that has just exhaust/intake mods....no problems. The two guys with chip/programmers........PROBLEMS!(i.e. turbo's going out, head gaskets blowing out causing oil contamination, tranny issues and injector issues).

Thanks. I am definitely installing the intake and exhaust upgrades. The programmer I'm considering is the Banks Ottomind which has a stock setting as well as 5 other settings. The various levels are not very aggressive and the unit has safety features available to limit EGT and turbo boost. I would not consider "race/sport" chips with the stock injectors and torque converter.

No problem.

Mine is slow going over the grades, but it gets there. And even with the 18K trailer, I still get around 10 mpg at 60 mph, so I'm in the ballpark on mileage from what everybody else is reporting.

If I were going to do any upgrades, I'd go the exhaust route first. I've read that the Ford intake is about as efficient as it gets, so any changes in that area would have to be highly recommended and justified before I'd spend the money.

I've also looked at the Ottomind and I think if I were going to do a chip/tuner, that would be one of my first choices. There are guys that do "custom" tunes, but Banks has been playing this game for a lot of years and long-standing reputation would have an impact on my choice.

My friend spent $16000.00 replacing his 06 PSD because of his banks (PDA) I believe is what he had. It used a palm like screen to show the information. He sold the inter cooler for $1000.00 so it wasn't a cheap purchase. He liked the power before it blew. Now with his 08 he doesn't like the fuel mileage. chevman

have no problems with pulling my 5er with stock F350 DRW LB CC 6.0TD. pulling sierra 375qbq. as stated earlier the 6.0 is wound pretty tight already. if i were to do anything at this point it would be exhaust and if i still had concerns change rear gear. i have 4.10 and get around 10.5 to 11.5 at 60-65mph. so going to 4.30 would help if you need it. IMHO. my dry weight is 12k. with all my stuff, propane and H2O, add another 1k to 1.5k so 13-13.5 loaded.

I have a 2004 Ford F350 with 6.0 diesel. I am considering installing the Banks Stinger System (Ram Air Intake, Monster Exhaust and Ottomind). I pull a 30 ft travel trailer now but will upgrade to a 35 ft 5th wheel soon. I am looking for positive or negative comments about doing this install. You will be stung by the stinger at 3800$ .A stock half ton can pull 6000 lbs and Ford 3500 can and will pull a 30 ft fifth wheel up to 18000,lbs with a 6.0 diesel ,three thousand eight hundred could buy the fuel at over four dollars to take care of this year .Your dime your time do as you want Skipper entry level over fifty years

Thanks

While Banks does make good equipment, I have to agree that they are severely overpriced. To upgrade fully you need to install a pyro to monitor your exhaust temp to ensure that you don't melt down (several tuners really add to the temp). Then you need to allow you engine to breath by adding a better intake and exhaust system. Several brands are very good.

Lastly would be the tuner. I highly recommend DP tuners (www.dp-tuner.com). They specialize in Ford Powerstrokes only! I installed a 50 hp towing module and while I have significant more power to pull my loads, my exhaust temps have actually decreased! Also, they are very reasonable in price. Call and talk to them first before any mods and they will send you down the right track.

If you do decide to go with it, let us know how you make out. I have a 2007 F-350 and am looking at the same stuff, although I may add the intercooler upgrade. I'm not as concerned with tow power as I am with getting better mileage. Truck pulls our 32' TT (10,500 - 11,000) fine although I'm sure a power increase wouldn't hurt. The mileage we get pulling is around 9 - 9.4 according to the dash display, on last trip speed was kept to 60 mph or below. When I use the truck for work I get 10 - 10.5. I know a guy with a 2005 F-250 PSD,with a similar work set up, just about 2000 lb lighter, he has changed his air intake, installed duals and he had a chip. Truck is fast(for a truck) but more important to me he is getting 20 mpg(imperial gal.) calculated, and 18.1 mpg as per dash display. What kind of numbers are you getting? If I can get some info on milage improvements it would make my decision easier, right now I'm paying $1.40/L($5.29/gal), Banks rep has said 1-2 mpg, just curious how accurate that may be. I guess the good thing for me is that as the price of fuel goes up, the payback time decreases, could make for an easier sell to DW.

Have you got pricing for the package? How much(if you don't mind) and from who?

Thanks

Doug
