If there is enough of the old strap still attached, have someone hold it down while you drill the hole. You can also tie a rope to the awning arm and then tie the other end off to something to hold it down.

I just replaced the strap on my zip dee window awning. I had to put in three rivets to hold it. I had a friend pull one side and I did hte other then one of us held it and the other drilled the holes for the rivets to go in. I hope three will hold better than the last 2 did.

Periscope, I just replaced my straps using your instructions. Took about two minutes per awning. I had been dreading tackling the job until I read this post. Thanks. Howard

Not only that but it is FACT! Ive had 2 sets of A&E Dometic awnings...and the ends caps as typical were rivet on BUT...the main awning cap always had a SLOT in the caps that lined up with the slot in the awning tube.

Since no one wanted the strap hanging all the time it was common that once camp was setup..to slide the strap all the way out and just toss it in the coach.

So as I said I NEVER had to remove the end cap to get the strap out..ever

Sully2,

He talking WINDOW awning. The broken strap is the one that holds awning open.

Funny how different they are. My window awnings strap hole lines up with the end caps but the main awning does not. I'll use the drill trick to replace the strap on my main awning.

I replaced all straps on my windows a while back. I went to Walmart and bought black nylon bicycle tie down straps that were (I think) 18 ft long. I sewed them and inserted a steel dowel. They were really tight to insert into the channel but they don't have to slide and are a much higher quality than the OEM.

Never pass up a chance to go somewhere

Window / Main/ A&E Dometic are the SAME

Zip Dee's such as I have now are totally different

Of course if the OP had stated what BRAND he really owned..it sure might have HELPED!

EXACTLY! Thats what I was trying to state. The reason your main awning end cap doesnt do it is because of sloppy assembly ( which happens I think about 50% of the time) If the maker hadnt meant / intended for that slot to be located with the one in the tube..they would never have put the slot in the end cap to begin with!
