to cool the trany.

I've never had my Allison Tranny overheat. My 02 Duramax has 60K miles on it now, about 80% of those miles with 11,000 pounds or more behind it, with my Sportsman 500 in the bed.
Yes, my mileage is low, I let my FIL drive it for 2 years while we were out of country.
Have you heard of people having temp problems?
Do you still feel that you are not losing any fuel economy?
I may try this on our trip to Idaho in 2 weeks and see. I've always just used it for grades in the past.

When not running in the mountains, I tow in overdrive and use the cruise. I have used the tow mode but my tranny runs 15-20 degrees cooler in overdrive. I live in North Alabama so we don't have many long steep inclines.

I've twoed 70,000 miles with my Ford and probably 75% of that has been with the cruise on. Can't even imagine why anyone would NOT use it unless there were ice or snow involved. Why would the manufacturer put a CC in the truck then tell you not to use it?

Cruise is used for nice flat roads/highways, set it about 60.

We routinely run across the PA Turnpike with the Roo 23SS behind my Expedition. Transmission is in Drive with overdrive selected -- or I'd not get 5th and 6th gears -- and cruise is set for about 65 mph which is 1800 rpm. I kick the cruise off only on a couple of very steep grades to avoid the transmission making a violent downshift.

I've been monitoring transmission and coolant temperatures and OD is fine. But I'm running about 4000 pounds less trailer than my maximum towing capacity and the truck has larger engine and transmission radiators as part of the HD tow package.

Fit a transmission temperature gage if you have doubts.

We use cruise as much as possible. When we had the HTT I only used tow/haul when we were in hilly areas. However now with a heavier trailer, about 2X the weight of the HTT, I use tow/haul all of the time. It will hold a gear longer which kepts the trans from shifting up and down so much. This will should reduce wear and help it last longer.

Using cruise does not affect towing. The cruise just simulates your foot on the pedal. I use tow/haul all the time which in my 03 Dodge just shuts of overdrive and makes it hold gears a little longer.

I experimented a little this weekend. I used cruise as long as the road permits. I have always heard that tow/haul locks out your overdrive which would keep the truck in a higher rpm range, meaning more fuel consumption. Tried tow/haul for the first time this weekend and low and behold overdrive gears are not locked and the truck ran 2 to 3 L/100 kms better. I was surprised and will be using the tow mode from now on.
