I'm new to camping in Texas and am looking to go to the hill country in the near future. We'll be coming from West Texas.
I'm looking for a family friendly rv resort/campground, but not necessarily Yogi Bear's type of location. I'm thinking of a layed back spot on the the river. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Last summer We stayed at Parkview Riverside RV Resort, Concan TX. The kids were having a great time on the river. I was wishing our Grandkids were with us.

We've enjoyed Guadalupe River SP a couple of times. Lots of wildlife, nice sites, great scenery by the river. My only complaint is that its a short walk or drive to the river as the area floods in heavy early spring rains. I would not consider it a "resort" type area, just your typical state park.

I would say that it is either a long walk or short drive to the river.
as you are Texas residents at least you can get the annual pass so you aren't nailed $5.00 per person per day, making Texas State parks more expensive than commercial campgrounds.

We stayed at the Guadalupe River RV Resort last month and enjoyed it. It is right on the Guadalupe River in Kerrville. See the link for info.
Also, here is Texas Outside rating for the park.

Hi Mic,
Haven't been to some of these parks, but for riverfront fun, San Marcos has a reputation of being the place to go.
Here is the Google search on that.

Not riverfront, but in the Hill County, I like Inks Lake State Park. Good fishing, lots of other kiddos and deer that walk right up to you. Very busy, so get in a reservation early for that stop.
If you wanted to tour the area around Fredricksburg, Pedernales Falls State Park is nice if the rainfall cooperates. It's a long walk down to there, but very beautiful but no sites on the water that I remember. A tour of the LBJ Ranch is pretty neat as well.
I've stayed at Blanco Settlement on the Blanco River, and there is a nice state park in Blanco as well.
If you are in the area, visit Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. It's a real Texas entertainment experience.
Have fun..

We've stayed in 2 parks on the Guadalupe between New Braunfels and Canyon Lake. They are Camp Heuco Springs (nearer to N.B.) and Lazy L&L (nearer to the lake). Both are fine parks, but I'd choose Camp Hueco Springs over the other.
Procrastinate now . . . don't wait.

Check our By The River RV Park in Kerrville. It's right on the river for great tubing and fishing. It's a small quiet park with full hook ups.

Looks like New Braunfels, maybe? For those of you wanting campsites directly on a river in Texas, the picture explains why this isn't a good idea. If you do find a riverside CG, be sure to add pontoons to your underbelly if it starts raining!
