Let's see if I understand this.

The Congress and other groups prevent the oil companies from exploring for oil, drilling for oil, and building new refineries. The same Congress and other groups block efforts to build nuclear power plants and implement alternative sources of power for our country.

Then the Congress has the audacity of grill oil-company executives on why the price of gas is so high! Maybe someone should ask Congress what they're doing to SOLVE the problem instead of making it worse.

Ok there are two types of energy. We as as country are going to have to figure out how to use it. First there is stationary power, think power plants, and then there is mobile power think car trucks trains etc. We are going to have to stop using oil and gas to power stationary power needs and use solar, nuclear and wind. Now we are going to have plug in cars in a year or two and the power grid will not be able to support that if we do not build more plants. they are going to have to be nuclear and it takes more than 2 years to get permits and the shell containment company that builds the shells are backlogged over ten years for other countries.

Oil companies make 4 cents a gallon on gas and the feds take 15 cents and the rest goes to expenses. They are renegotiating with Nigeria and Venezuela stole the fields and Russia did too.
THey just sell alot of gallons so if they made no money it would go down 4 cents. Wow huge.

We need to drill off our coasts, se need to build refineries and we have to hope and pray we do not have a hurricane. Think of Katrina and the jump in fuel prices. It will be to 6 bucks a gallon if it happens this time.

I was listening to an analyst on CNBC yesterday. He was talking about the rising cost of fuel. He stated that by next year we will be longing for the good old days of $4.00 a gallon. He was hinting that we will be paying around $10.00 to $15.00 a gallon in the near future.

This is just hype for the futures trading speculators. They feed on good news such as this or bad news such as a refinery fire. It's surprising that no one can really pinpoint the recent spike in oil prices, but they can all tell you what it's going to be down the road. Pure speculation.

The big issue here is choice.
We don't have a choice with high gas prices. For eg: If a gallon of milk is $4.00, I have choice whether or not to buy it.

Why would oil companies build more refineries? They won't do anything to lower the price.

The economy will go into a massive tail spin. People can only afford the necessities to survive.

You have it right. Problem is we need people in Congress that are thinking (stretch) about the situation, instead of making political speeches on the floor.

This is no surprise to me. Who owns all the publicly traded companies? The stockholders, aka you, me, and anyone who owns stock in that company. The problem is you and I don't really set company policy. Those decisions are made by the board of directors and proxy votes. The people making those decisions are only concerned with profits and getting dividends to their shareholders. I believe that the vast majority of people who own these stocks (through mutual funds and retirement funds) would prefer to see a little less dividend and a lot lower fuel prices. So to affect change several things need to happen. We need to kick our elected official in the backside and send them packing. (Our founding fathers never intended for us to be represented by "career politicians" and I believe the career politician has been a major downfall for this country.) Stockholders need to let the oil companies that they own stock in know they are unhappy with the gouging and lack of new refineries and new oil fields and if it doesn't change they will sell off their stock. We also need to let our politicians know we need to "allow" the oil companies to build new refineries and drill for more oil by easing the ridiculous restrictions put on those 2 activities. And most importantly we need to start a "fuel race" just like JFK did with the "space race". We need a President who will stand up and say "we will develop a fuel that you can burn in your current gas and/or diesel vehicle that is made from a renewable, inexpensive and domestic resource. We will have this fuel within 3 years." We have the brain power and resources in this country to do it. We just need the will power and leadership to get it done.

If that happens the economy will be in a depression no one could afford gas private citizens or company's.
