Do you think that the special rates for 5ers are in effect for my E-ZPASS administered under the MTA Bridges & Tunnels Authority as well as your E-ZPASS administered by the NYS Thruway Agency?

I am not sure, but I bet they have no idea

I don't think that it will work off the NYS Thruway. I rememeber in the beginning of the conversation she was saying it only work sof the NYS Thruway...and I kept saying, that was what I am talking about.

Are you saying that you tow your 5th wheel through the e-zpass lane with your normal tag? What rate are you charged?

Easily solved. Moved off that thing called the coast .

That may sound easy, but I it would be pretty difficult to move my business just because NYS Thruway sucks

Some information and a question.

1st, In Delaware we have high speed EZPass lanes. There is no toll booth and you drive thru at the posted speed of 65MPH. Most people fly thru an even higher speeds and your transmitter is still read and you are billed accordingly.

I call the Delaware EZPass office one day and asked if I was pulling my RV could I still use the high speed express lanes or not. I was told that I could and I will be billed accordingly. My pickup gets charge normally as a car unless I am towing and then it charges me truck pulling a trailer rate. Don't ask me how, they must be using photo eyes or something to count your axles. But it works. I use to "beat" the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and be charge at a car rate. But it didn't take Maryland long to figure that one out. Now they get you for the full amount.

2nd, If I am in New York, what do I do? Drive thru the regular lane (toll booth) and they will charge my EZPass for the correct amount? Or am I screwed if I travel thru New York?

If you have to ask why I drive a Diesel, then you will never understand.

My experience with the NY EZ Pass system.
I am from RI and have a NY EZ Pass because I tow over the Tap. My truck is registered as commercial in RI even though I am not a business. That's the way it is. It is over 7000 pounds GVWR and dual wheel.

I had to get a commercial EZ Pass account to start with, then at the same time I filled out the form to receive the special discounted 4H Tag for the truck/5er combo.

I had some questions before I sent in the form and every single person I spoke to was extremely friendly and helpful. When I got my tags it was obvious that they sent the wrong discount tag (it was for a VAN) I called and I had the correct tag in a week.

When I returned the wrong tag I neglected to wrap it in foil and got charged for 2 tolls that the mail truck went thru. I called about it but they only reimbursed 1 toll. My screw-up.

The second thing that got me was when I went thru the Del Water Gap toll on 80. The cash lane is $1.50 for the truck and trailer but the commercial EZ Pass gets charged over $9. They would not fix that one so I do not use the Tag thru DWG tolls. The Garden State Parkway is not a problem. I have checked with other possible toll roads (on-line info) locally (MA, NH, NJ, MD)and it appears that the DWG is the only one that charges outrageous commercial rates for the EZ-pass. I need to call MassPike and NH just to confirm, though.

All in all it has been fairly smooth with the discount tag ($10.12 at the Tap instead of a potential $22.25). Everyone I've spoken to has been very helpful and friendly. It is really nice to pass by the long lines at the cash lanes!

ON EDIT= I read somewhere on the NYEZPASS web site that NY discount rates only apply to accounts issued by NYS. It can be very difficult to find info on that web site so if you find something of interest, make sure you print it out or bookmark it for future reference.

Maybe I will not use the blue one I got. I found this on the NYS site...

Quote:

I sometimes pull a camper or trailer with my vehicle. Can I still use my tag?

Yes. In this instance the equipment in the lane is designed to identify that your vehicle is pulling a trailer and you will be charged accordingly. However, if you think this will be a regular occurrence, you should call the Customer Service Center and have them send you a tag programmed for the vehicle classification you use most frequently. You should never use your tag in a vehicle type other than the one you initially requested (i.e. Car tag in a tractor-trailer).

Steve,
There are at least 2 authorities that administer E-ZPASS in NYS. One is the MTA Bridges and Tunnel Authority and the other is the NYS Thruway Authority. When you said that they were nice and friendly, you obviously talked to the Thruway.... and not the MTA which is mine.

I get nailed $15.20 EACH WAY for the Throgs Neck Bridge. The other bridges and tunnells off LI cost the same or even more. My only other alternative is the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient, NY to New London, CT. Over $100 each way.

Rosspulliam- Have you been standing too close to your propane tank? My brother and his family live in Derby, Kansas, which is near Witchita. He doesn't have to worry about tolls anymore because his Class A was destroyed by hail, along with his roof, etc. Luckily the tornado passed a few miles away. Every morning I worry about him when I see the weather on Fox Cable News. We have hurricanes here on Eastern LI but have had only one in the 40 yrs I've lived here, in 1985, which blew down a few trees and knocked out the electric for a few hrs.

Hi Ed,
I've been using the CSF a bit lately. This past Thursday the guy taking the tickets on the Orient Point side commented on how I was "back again". My Dodge 1500 is an unusual color so I guess its easy to remember. It cost [the company] $95 and change but it is the easiest way to access our customers on LI.
I just called the 800 number from the web site so I guess I got lucky. I really thought that it would be a hassle [dealing with gov't entity].

Bluefreight, I have blue tags and a commercial account so you are probably correct.

I was the person who asked about the blue tag. I got one that is suppose to be coded as a 4L for our SUV and HTT. I suspect it is wrong one.
