Go for the V-10. I'm pulling with a 2002 Chevy 6.0 gasser and I don't think I would want to get anywhere near 12K lbs with it.

BTW, as soon as possible it will be sitting still also, reserved for pulling the TT and the occasional trips to Lowes.

He said 5 MPG, even a 30,000 lb 39ft 8.1 MH towing a toad gets better MPG than that.

My 2 cents. I am currently pulling a 30ft 10500 lb (loaded) Toy Hauler with a 2003 2500HD 6.0 gasser with 4:10 gearing. My experience is that I wish I had gone with the 8.1 or Diesel. On the interstate at 65 MPH it's not too bad. ANY little grade or hill and it struggles a bit. Last trip to Myrtle Beach I got an average 9.7 MPG and would probably gotten better with the 8.1 and definatly would have gotten better with a Diesel and chip. Again, just my opinion, stay with the setup you have.

JMO, but it seems crazy to trade in any truck today in order to get a slightly smaller one with the goal of getting better mileage. The MPG gains, if any, will likely be eaten up many times over by the loss you'll take on the trade-in.

Last fall was the perfect time to sell or trade a 6.0 PSD since diesel prices increased about $1.50 a gallon in the last 8 months.

On second thought, I feel you would be money ahead to keep the diesel, versus trying a different truck. You most likely wont get a fair price for your trade right now, and that diesel will definately tow 12,000# better than the V-10, or the 6.0L GM.

However, and this is speaking from personal experience, Make sure you unload that 6.0L PSD BEFORE the warranty expires. Up to the point before the warranty runs out, you should be financially benefitted by keeping the diesel over trading for gassers of similar years. I am afraid the dealer you would trade to wouldn't offer you a fair price for that diesel.

I was going to keep my 6.0 PSD Excursion until the 5 year PSD warranty ran out this coming Aug but my wife wanted to get a 12 passenger van so we sold it last fall and purchased the van in March. I would never be able to sell the PSD Excursion now for what I sold it for last October since diesel was only $3.12 a gallon back then and now its over $5 at some stations in this area.

I had the Ford V10 in my excursion. All I can say is that you'll be sorry if you give up your diesel for a V10 gasser. Especially at 12,000lb. The gasser just don't cut it like a diesel does.

The cost of fuel is an entirely different story.
