You're right that the pipe fittings are compression ring, but the temp probe uses NPT fitting.

As far as I am concerned, there is only one location to accurately measure your tranny temps from. That is your transmission cooler outline. I have seen temps get as high as 300 degrees coming out of that line.

I hope you mean the line leading to the tranny cooler (hot line). If it's the line leaving the cooler and your seeing 300 degrees then your transmission is probably toast!!!

Greg; yes he is talking about the sending unit and the male ¼ NPT end going into the tranny, the line does not need any sealant.

Hemi; yes the line leading out to the cooler is the line they are talking about, and just for the record as IB516 stated the text in his post was copied from the first link at the bottom of his post.

So far I have not located a ¼ NPT male, 1/8 NPT female, ¼ flare fitting female as one unit, I can do it using bushings and a nipple but not as a single unit. Looks like a have found a niche market, maybe I can sell them to the gage companies. I called Geno’s Garage and they claim you will get the same readings from the pan as you will from the line. I would think that the fluid leaving the tranny via the cooler line out would have the highest temps not the pan right?

Ok I’m should get the boast gauge that is on back order sometime next week in the mean time I need to find out where I should install the sending unit for the trans temp gauge.

I was thinking about removing the pan and installing there. I have read pros and cons about using the test port so were is the best location.

My membership expired over at TDR and the DW thinks I should not renew it…mean DW anyway!
So anyrate here is your chance to tell me where to stick it!

Diesel Manor's instructions for installing the auto tranny cooler sensor line is on the outlet piping coming out of your tranny to your tranny oil cooler.

Diesel Manor even sells a Dodge factory pre-formed cooler tubing like your original with the "T" fitting for your oil temp sensor to screw into already in the line.

You'll get your highest temps on the tranny oil where it first exits the tranny body via the metal tubing to go to the cooler. So that's where diesel manor recommends it and sells the appropriate parts to do it.

It makes sense that you'd want your highest temp reading for your gauge. That's where it exits the tranny after circulating through the tranny. All other areas are going to give you cooler than your highest/actual reading.

Yep I’ll order the tee fitting from the company in the link above your post cost with shipping will be under $10 compaired to $89 + shipping for the premade line. All I’ll do is mark the middle between the bends then move up 0.890 and down 0.890 remark it there and cut on the two lines then install the fitting with the temp sensor and then reinstall the line. After I get the boost gauge and fitting I’ll do the install and post some pics of the job.

I got the same fitting at Ace Hardware for $5.99. Watch for clearance in the bends on the pipe - I found the best fit for me was at the other end of the hard line, near the heat exchanger under the turbo.

As I noted above, the resident tranny guru on dieselram.com posted a thread where he used "one 1/4" pipe street tee with one male fitting. One 1/4 to 1/8 pipe bushing" to install the T directly into the tranny outlet port - no cutting of the line required.

Greg; are you talking about the fitting for the line or the fitting that goes into the tranny itself? Which one does Ace carry?

The main reason I like the fitting that goes on the line is it is metal and is taped 1/8 NPT for the sending unit.

The other fitting and bushing will need to be altered by grinding the top portion of the tee down the re taping the fitting and also grinding the bottom of the bushing and re taping it to get the sender into the oil flow. Note that all brass fittings have a 250*F max temp rating where the steal fittings do not. I don't think the temp rating is a problem though it should be noted.

I got the T w/ 2 compression fittings and 1/2" NPT (I used a coupling and a bushing to get down to 1/8" NPT for the sender - included with my gauge install kit) at Ace Hardware. I cut my hard line near the heat exchanger on the downstream end of the coolant line, as it appeared I didn't have room between the bends on the line near the tranny. Tim's post about putting the connector into the tranny and connecting the line to the T looks like a cleaner install, but does require more bench work altering the T as you noted.
