We occasionally had those kind of problems with out kids when they were teenagers and we'd make them go whether they wanted to or not. They now tell us that those camping trips are some of their fondest childhood memories. Most of the time it was pretty apparent they were having a good time shortly after we arrived at the campsite but we always made sure we did things THEY were interested in as well as things WE wanted to do.

Drag his butt with. He WILL thank you later.
I didn't want to go with my parents when I was 16 either and they made me!
After about a day or so I couldn't even fake being ticked off,the experience of all the different places and different scenery I saw out west especially in Colorado were very memorable for a city kid, and quite frankly it was THAT trip that has stayed with me and has been my motivation for the RV'ing I do today, xx years later!!

Agreed. Why does it seem that today's families revolove around the kids? While I'm all for everyone having a good time and trying to choose things the whole family will enjoy, parents should make the rules and decide who goes where and when.

Actually, we DO camp less now that our teen doesn't want to go. We camped extensively from (his) age 4 years to 15 years, and have cut back last summer and this upcoming summer. When we do camp, we go with another family with a same-age teen. After all, in just another year, he'll be off to college, and we can camp all we want. Yes, we could make him go, but he's part of the family, too, and will be gone all too soon.
Happy Camping!

You think 16 is too young? WOW, How long are going to keep them on a leash? C'mon now, 16? I used to stay home alone at 13. And yes I respected my parents. Back then there was no such thing as CPS! If I did not do what I was told. I was rollin!!! And not rollin cool either if you get my drift.
I say leave him home and have some trust. If you really don't want to leave him home, keep telling him it's ok to stay home over and over. I'll bet by the time comes to leave he'll want to go!
Unless his GF is waiting, then you can take her along too!
Good luck.

Very few 16-year-olds feel they want to spend time with their family; it's not "cool" and they'd much rather be hanging with their friends. However, I agree, take him with anyway - maybe not quite as much as you want to go, but more than he wants to. As skipnchar mentioned, try to find CGs with things to do that he might enjoy, be it a game room, other teens, a pool, or a nearby activity (theme park, air show, etc.) that appeals to him. Let him bring his tunes (with earphones!) or handheld electronic games, but bring him along. Good luck!

An easy solution is to have your teen take a friend along.....
