how does the hot water heater get filled with water so i can turn it on to get hot water in the 5th wheel? does it fill automatically when i fill up the trailer with water, or do i have to do this manually somehow? and do you recommend firing up the hot water heater before leaving for the trip, or should i do this only when i get to the campsite? thanks

I am new to this but I was told your water heater will fill when you turn on the hot water at the faucet. By running the faucet it pumps water into the tank.

Also I wouldn't bother turning it on before you go. It only takes 15-30 minutes to heat up.

Most folks don't turn the WH on till they reach their destination. It takes only about 15 minutes to get really hot water out of the WH. When you camp, make sure the water runs out of the hot water faucet before turing the heater on! That way you wont burn up an empty water heater. When you charge the water line (hooked up to a hose) or turn the pump on, you will hear the system pumping. Run some cold water faucets and hot water faucets to get the air out of the system. Other wise the water will sputter and hiss when you open the faucet. This way you'll know the water heater is full of water and not air! Good luck!

When you opoen the hot water faucet if water is able to flow in the trailer any air in the tank will be replaced by water if the winterizeing valves are not set for winterize. Just leave the hot water valve open till no more air comes out then the tank should be full and you can turn it on. If you do not know how to check your winterizing valves I would turn oon the hot water tank for propane use for a while and check again to see if you get warmer water then you can turn on the electric element on the tank. Do not turn on the electric element unless you are sure the tank is full of water as you will burn out the electric element as fast as you can say "oops". HTH

Your pump will automatically fill the water heater tank when you ask it for hot water. If the tank is empty from being drained or winterized be sure and turn on a hot water spigot to let the air out of the system and allow the tank to fill. This is especially important with an electric element as it will burn out if voltage is applied while it is dry.

does it fill automatically when i fill up the trailer with water, or do i have to do this manually somehow? and do you recommend firing up the hot water heater before leaving for the trip, or should i do this only when i get to the campsite? thanks

In my experience the RV water heaters heat very quickly and it is not necessary to turn them on while traveling. Some feel it is also unsafe to do this and it also may cause the flame to burn poorly and smoke up the heater vent/cover.

Finally-- Why do you feel it is necessary to heat HOT water ?

I just replaced the anode rod in my Suburban 10 gal hot water heater. I flushed the debris out of the tank at the same time, so had to refill the water heater before turning it back on. I find that it fills fastest if you open the pressure relief valve to let out most of the air. You should also remove the anode rod or bottom plug to clean out debris once a year. If your wh is free of debris (mostly mineral deposits lying loose on the bottom) you won't flush debris through your pressure relief valve and cause it to leak.

sunnyvalesmostwanted,

Please just ignore the "smart-alec's" that always pop up. They must have some need to prove something.

Assuming that the RV is not winterized, and that the bypass is properly set for use, I suggest that you connect to city water as you would when parked and turn that on. You can then open each of your faucets one at a time until all air is removed from the entire system. That will vent the air from your plumbing as well as from the water heater.

It will take less time if you follow the advice of opening the pressure relief valve on your water heater to vent the air from it, but If you do so it is also a good idea to close it before all air is out, just to be sure that you keep sufficient air cushion in the top to allow for water expansion.

There is no need to turn on the water heater until you arrive at your destination. It typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes for the water to heat up.
