I think about that economy factor every time I stop for a potty break on the highway with my conventional trailer. Is it worth the extra fuel for the convenience? So far, yes. At a future $10 per gallon, all bets are off.
I've had a friend killed when he pulled off to the side of the expressway. He was hit by someone not paying attention and went into the emergency lane. With irresponible and careless drivers now using cell phones (had a friend put in the hospital when a cell phone using lawyer was more dedicated to his phone call than his primary role of driving), I'd never pull off the road unless I had a true emergency. With rest areas and truck stops every other 10 minutes, I can surely wait and be safer.
Even when we traveled in the Travel trailer, we never ate or went to the bathroom in it. The rest stops have nice picnic tables and restrooms. I would never feel safe sleeping in a Walmart parking lot especially after seeing some less than safe activity there at night.
Everyone has their own comfort level of safety, I just don't like being in expressway emergency lanes or busy megamart parking lots.
With rig in Signature which has the 5.4 liter gasser the tow weight of my trailer loaded is 5200lbs at 65 mph I get 10 MPG anything over that I start taking a real hurting on the gas mileage.
When I tow my pop up I get 13 mpg

What are you towing with, engine and trans, what is the GVW of your trailer and what is your MPG and your avg towing speed.
07 Liberty 3.7 4 speed auto
4000 GVW trailer
13.5 at 60-65 mph.
2005 Silverado 2500HD duramax diesel, Allison 5 speed automatic, GVW of fiver is,(weighed at scales), 10,400 lbs. I get 10.4 MPG traveling at 65-70 MPH. GCW of truck and camper fully loaded, (water, fuel, passengers, etc.) is 17,400 lbs
Well I noticed a couple of other pup owners chiming in here too so I will throw my 2 cents as well. With our set up I get between 16 - 18 mpg while towing. Someday we may move up to a TT or 5ER but for now with the price of gas I am glad we have what we have.

I Tow in the BC mountains: The rockies..where the hills last 35 kilometers and are typcially 6-10% grades. Those are serious hills..!
Avg. towing mileage to Kamloops from Calgary 12.6 mpg hand calculated. That's with the trailer ully loaded with gear/food/clothes & 5 Gal water and 4 persons in the truck. Trailer loaded = 4450 lbs.
I find the biggest thing is not the weight but that giant "sail" we push the wind with.!
MT Truck: All depends on speed/tire pressure. 80 psi on all 4 rubbers, running 60 mph: I'll get up to 21.5 mpg. (My), normal hwy driving will net me 17.5 to 19 mpg and thats at 70mph on avg.
I am about to embark on a cross Canada trip (Moving). From Calgary to Barrie, Ontario. I will keep track using the DIC and receipts/mileage. We shall see..!!

Hi, I have an '06 Dmax/Allison 2500 and a 10,000lb GVW fiver, average mileage towing is 12 American, roughly 14.4 Imperial. Canadian gallons are 4.5 liters, American 3.8, about a 20% difference without getting into the .000+/- thing
