My '99 GMC Sierra is having a fuel gage problem. At times when I start the truck the gage will read empty and the low fuel light comes on, then as I drive on down the road the gage slowly rises to the level it should be at. At other times the gage will read properly then suddenly it will be on empty and again the low level light comes on. The guy I bought the truck from said his other truck, Tahoe, does it as well. Anyone else having this problem?

I have a 1999 truck and it does the same thing. I think it is a common problem with these trucks. It is a lot of work to replace sender unit in tank!

That's a common problem with your GMC. My '01 has been good so far but I know a lot of folks who haven't been as lucky. Yes, the sending unit in the tank needs to be replaced. It's doable but it can be costly. You'll probably spend more in labor than on parts.

Mine does the same thing on a 2000 Silverado. It started about 3 year ago. I read on the internet that for some people it was a matter of cleaning the wires leading to the tank however dropping the tank to get to the wires or replacing the pump isnt worth it. After 10 minutes or so it produces a normal reading.

There was a time a while ago where a gas refiner let too much sulfur into the gas. The result was an excess of corrosion on the silver contacts of the fuel sending unit. One fix that works about 70% of the time was to add a fuel system cleaner to the gas. It's a cheap try and you stand a pretty good chance of it working.

Exactly same problem with my 2000 Silverado. I've ignored it for a couple of years and doesn't seem to get any worse or quit working entirely.

My 99 GMC suburban did it for a long time, then stopped, now the gauge needle vibrates so quickly and nearly imperceptibly that you think your eyes are blurring. If the sender dies, I'll fix it. Till then I just ignore it.
