Raccoons fighting over a bag of doggie treats in the middle of the night is enuff excitement for me, thank you. And it was a large bag left out in the golf cart! Fortunately we were in Missouri in deer, possum, and hoot owl country, and not in bear country.

While on the subject of guns, I was told that there is no way to travel with a hand gun as each state requires its own license. I was convinced I would have to sell mine before I start out on my cross country next year. True or not?
Thanks, Sage

I was asleep at the Mt. Rose Campground high above Lake Tahoe last summer when I was awakened by the exact same thing - violent shaking of the truck. The dogs barked like mad and I too grabbed the 9 mm. thinking it was a person. I was too scared to go out or to even look out. The shaking stopped, the dogs calmed, and I went back to sleep. In the morning I found huge paw prints all around the camper. I guess the food inside didn't smell good enough for him to have exerted more effort! And yes, I know the 9mm wouldn't have helped with a bear!

I am a 40 cal xd springfield man myself. The truth is that 9mm ammo has come along ways from the day that we all said it was a worthless round. Like it has been stated that two clips of 9mm will stop a bear. My father killed a nice bear with a 22 hand gun one time. We were out running our hounds to keep them in shape when they crossed this bear track. Anyways they got away from us to fast. By the time we got to them that old bear was tearing them up. The only way to stop the fight was to use the bear tag or shoot the dogs. Yes i have had them in my camp and standing in the bed of my truck. I like bears coming to camp with us.

My grandfather was a logger in Aberdeen, WA. My mother used to tell of growing up on "bear stew", made from bears that her father would shoot when he was out logging. Only later in life did she discover how much "bear stew" tasted like (out of season) venison.

Don't discount pepper spray, it's an effective deterent:
"Of the 72 cases where persons sprayed bears to defend themselves, 50 (69%) involved brown bears, 20 (28%) black bears, and 2 (3%) polar bears. Red pepper spray stopped bears' undesirable behavior 92% of the time when used on brown bears, 90% for black bears, and 100% for polar bears. Of all persons carrying sprays, 98% were uninjured by bears in close-range encounters."

dave54 wrote: A 9mm or a .357 magnum is sufficient for a black bear. Actually a .22 will work on a black. Just put a couple of shots into the ground at his feet and he will scamper off as fast as he can. Most of the time banging on something metal or just hollering and making noise will scare them off. I have done it many times. Don't shoot a black bear, or any 4-legged camp visitor, if you don't have to.
I've always figured the best use of a small firearm is to scare them off. I carry my 92F everywhere I go. But, against critters I figure it's a better noise maker than anything else. Here in the San Bernardino Mountains it isn't often you see a bear while boondocking. It's more common to see them rummaging through trash cans at the campground.

If I am traveling I have a 12 gauge loaded with slug and buck and know how to change it out pretty fast to all slug.If I am going to grizzly country it is a 300 win mag in a lightweight mountain rifle. It works great. I also usually have some smaller stuff along for fun too. Why, it makes sense.
