Edwardo,
Be honest, you came south for the warm weather during the winter, cost of fuel probably was not an issue. I would not stay in Canada in the winter either. I'm either in Florida or Texas RGV each winter. Our northern states weather is not that much different from Canada during the summer months so no need to enter Canada to escape the heat, especially with the added cost of fuel. I thought the summer months in Nova Scotia in 05 were down right chilly.

Our Fairbanks paper today has a note by a local columnist about the lack of motor homes showing up by Memorial Day. This is quite unusual for us. His opinion is that fuel costs might be keeping all of you away.

We used to drive a Volvo but by the time we needed to buy another one, the price had gone up so high we couldn't afford it. Other things have gone the same way so I don't see why the price of gas would be an exception. I checked out the cost of a seasonal site at a local campground, $1,650 May-October, about $1,000 less than it costs us to go to the west coast to see our kids and grandchildren and we tow a 17' HTT!

We came out of Homer yesterday and it was a steady stream of rigs heading that way all day. Have encountered several places that say they are not as full. One place was down 70 precent over last year and she figured it was not only the feul but the economy in general. We are doing the best we can to leave our money in Alaska and having a ball doing it. Great place and extremely wondertful people.

We plan to leave Tuesday or Wednesday for about 3 months. It will be a shock but having gone in 2005 and being of an age and not sure if we can ever do it again, we are really looking forward to it.

Alaska is one of those places that can not be described. You have to have see it to understand what people are trying to tell you.

I think that Memorial Day is a little early benchmark the season, particularly when the out-of-staters don't really arrive in mass until mid-June. For what it's worth, we drove between Anchorage and Talkeetna this weekend, and the campgrounds had plenty of activity, consisting of area residents and rental rigs.

Memorial Day has always been a benchmark for Fairbanks. You maybe don't see them because they choose to drive up the Alcan and not take a side trip to Anchorage right off the bat.
