I'm looking for a bike rack idea to haul 4 bikes without getting them all beat up.Do I build something off the back trailer frame or something off the truck? I've tried the cheap racks with the 2" receiver and it gave my bikes paint job a great workout.(I'm sure, due to the bouncing around even with hd tarp straps attached) post pics or ideas. Thanks

I just purchased a Hitch Haul from J.C. Whitney and installed on my receiver on the back of the 5er. I put 4 bikes on last night and strapped down. We head out after work today for the weekend. I'll let you know how it works out. The only mod I did was to make a pedistle with a foot to bolt to the trailer side (in the middle) of the platform. This gave me something to tie the bikes to. My profile still shows that I have a travel trailer. But, I can't seem to be able to change my profile from here. I'll let you know how everything works.

Have you considered a front-mount hitch for the truck? I have one and use it for many things, like hauling my generator. You could use a well-made bike rack and use straps to the front tow hooks to reduce bouncing. Many folks here do it and seem to be happy with the setup.
The only drawback is bug splats. You could use bike covers but you might reduce engine cooling...

Some folks may not like this idea if they aren't very mobile, we use fork mount roof racks made by Yakima! Easy to load from back of pickup truck. Lay a rag on bike rack, put front fork on rag, slide bike toward front of truck, set rear wheel on rack, wife holds back tire while I move to front door, mount fork in skewer, lock, and secure back tire with ractchet strap included. Done! 2 min. job for each bike. Reverse procedure to remove. You can also load a couple kayaks. Works for us.Clic here for roof rack pic

Receiver hitch off the pin box with Soft Ride bike rack. You see your bikes all the time. A few bugs but who looks.

Have the same thing for four bikes (actually we don't have to remove the tires on the kids bikes) but set it up so the forks of the adult bikes sit towards the back of the truck, just roll the rear wheel back and secure. MUCH BETTER than a rear mounted rack that destroys the bikes. Worth the money!!!

I use the Yakima Rack System on top of my crew cab for 2 adult bikes and 2 10 foot kayaks. Been running that way for about three years with no problem. I load them over the tail gate before hooking up the trailer.

I either carry my bikes inside the trailer or on a Thule rack over the cab. I also turned the trays around so the fork mount is at the back. Drop the rear wheel in the tray, and roll the bike into position.
Once the bikes are on the rack, I also run a cble lock thru all the frames and around the crossbars. Just a little extra security if someone decides they want a new bike at my expense.

Hi Joe; DW and I started kayaking last summer so I designed a roof rack that could carry 2 kayaks and 2 mtn bikes (see profile page). It is made from aluminum.
It may give you some ideas, if you are in to building something yourself.
If you want more details, PM me and I can provide.
good luck...

Have you checked out www.toppoprails.com? They sell bikeracks for 5vers attached to the kingpin, or on the front of the travel trailer. With a separate attachment you can use the same rack on the hitch receiver of the truck. Might give some ideas.
