All you toy haulers out there who haul four wheelers I need your advice.

I want to get hubby a new four wheeler for his birthday/father's day (both on the same day...isn't he lucky?).

I need advice as to which kind is the best, size, etc. The only thing I can tell you is, it will need to be camo.. he is a hunter/trapper, and will want this feature (even though he has no clue he is getting this).

Please, any advice you can give would be great! Anything you hate about yours would be nice to know too. He is 6'3 and about 250/275 pounds so will probably have to have a larger one (or so I've been told so far).

Thanks!

All of the brands seem to be making some great machines these days. 500cc seems to be a good size for most people also.

I personally recommend the Polaris 500 EFI. It's a good all around machine with some nice features, but especially nice as far as comfort goes. The cush suspension, plush seat, knee bolsters and overall size make for a very nice ride.

If I were out to buy my dream machine and money wasn't an issue, I'd look at the Can-Am Outlander 800 H.O. EFI XT in Camo. 10k is a little out of my range though. The Polaris 800 EFI is pretty sweet also.

Good luck!

Almost all the hunters I go out with have the Polaris ATV's. Polaris makes a heavy but powerful 4x4. Some makers make machines that are faster and lighter, but for a comfortable ride that can haul out your kill Polaris is tops in my book. You do not say if you want a UTV or ATV. For ATV you may want to look at the Polaris X2, it has a dump box that is great for hauling equipment and game, plus it has a longer wheelbase for a more stable ride. If you're looking for a UTV (side by side) Polaris and Yamaha both make great machines.

I agree with others about a 500 cc being big enough for the job and the Polaris is a good machine. I have a 2004 Arctic Cat 500 and really like it. My Arctic Cat Prowler 650 UTV is wider than the Yamaha two seater so is much more stable. An older friend has the Rhino and put spacers behind the wheels to make it less likely to tip. A side by side (UTV) may suit your husband well because of the dump box where he could carry his traps, etc. A/C has a rack system that can accommodate many accessories to change size and for special brackets. They both offer camo. I recommend Polaris or Arctic Cat.......

Most models you like at will have these features but a hunter needs:

1) 4X4 = 4 wheel drive

2) EFI = Fuel Injection

3) At least a 500cc and I'd probably look for a 650-700cc myself

I'm not sure that there are many 'bad' models out there nowadays. As far as what you're after, I'd say Polaris and Artic Cat are the most popular.

I know you want to surprise him, but I'd make sure you can fully exchange the ATV no matter what you get in case he really wanted something else.

Is this his first ATV, what's he riding now? You may want to speak with some of his hunting buddies to get their suggestions too. Dealer support is a big deal too.

I agree that dealer support is a big help in choosing an ATV. While I drive an Arctic Cat, my sons Yamaha is really nice and good quality. Hate to say it, but it would be worth it for him to get a feel for them and have him tell you what he likes.

There are way to many choices and you really can't make a bad one. Every one has a camo option and most have locking diffs, which he will want. Another thing to look for is independent long-travel four-wheel suspension, makes for a much smoother ride. I have a Yamaha Grizzly 700 with electric power steering, I know it sounds hoakie, but it is so nice on those day long rides. I'm 6'-3" and 280 as well and for me it's the perfect fit, the wife loves riding double with me much better than on my old Honda. One thing I like about mine is that it weighs a lot less than Polaris's and Arctic Cat's. But like I said, you can't go wrong with any of them.

One more thing, I agree the 500 is plenty, 700 max for power. The manly thing is to want big power as in the 800's but the 500 gets MUCH better gas mileage and has all the power you will need. I almost talked myself into the 800 even though I've ridden a 500 for years. Good sense won out, I'm happy with my 500.

I have the Can-Am 800 XT Max, as well as a Suzuki King Quad, a couple Hondas, and a Yamaha. After getting the Can-Am and riding it a time or two, I haven't even ridden the other toys, I enjoy the 800 too much. The most power of any of mine, the best ride, and the most fun factor . The independent suspension, the handling, and the power. Can't ask for any more than that. Expensive? Yes. Would I buy it again? Absolutely!! Just my .02.
