We are heading to Yellowstone for the first time in a couple of weeks and will be staying in Madison Campground in our hybrid. We are trying to prepare for storing some of our food in the bear boxes overnight. Can anybody tell me the rough inside dimensions of the bear boxes? I would like to make sure that the bins and ice chest I bring are small enought to fit.
Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that there are bear boxes? When we were there in 04, the boxes were just for backpackers/bikers with no vehicle. We camped in Madison in our hybrid, and kept all scented items in the back of our SUV.
Btw, we are from California, with plenty of bear experience in Sequoia and Yosemite, so we were surprised to find that bear boxes were not required.
If it were me, I would telephone the rangers in Yellowstone to check about food storage rules.
I've camped at Madison on numerous occasions and never seen any bear boxes in the RV area of the campground. They MAY be available in the tenting area though but I don't actually recall seeing them there either. Bears really aren't much of a problem in Yellowstone any more since the strict bear policy has been in effect there for many years. If a bear enters a campground they're immediately removed and anyone not keeping a clean bear proof camp by storing food and cooking gear indoors, is dealt with quickly. Just keep things clean and leave NOTHING outside and you'll be fine.
my solution to the "bear problem" is to every night take my food scraps, put them in a paper bag, and take them to the opposite end of the campground and throw them under a camper there.
but I do believe that the bear boxes are small units designed for hikers, etc.

bear boxes is more for tenters and popups not so much for rvs we have them in the adirondacks .we used to just hang the coolers from ropes over a tree limb as high as you could get it, if you didnt you could go hungry and the bears would go away full.
