We are not fans of reservations, most of our camping is bare boondocking, when we do hit a campground there is usually space, and for one night we can hack most anything.
I'm one of those "gotta have a reservation" type people. That's just one less thing to be concerned about along the way. The last thing I want to worry about is finding a spot to sleep (won't do WalMart or a truck stop) when I'm trying to enjoy myself. If we change our mind we'll call ahead to somewhere else and work it from there. When we tented and when we had our pop-up we were less concerned but at 35 feet it gets a little more difficult to find a spot. Less people on the road due to fuel costs? I'd like to know where. Spent the weekend on the Cape in a sold-out campground and JUST missed getting in the midst of a 5 mile back-up getting over the Sagamore bridge. During week right now I wouldn't be worried but weekends may still be an issue. For Bar Harbor I'd recommend the KOA.
I am the planning and reservation type - but we go to high demand places and want to make sure we get the site we want. No WalMarts for us, thank you very much. It we have to cancel it might cost us $10 unless we just change the dates and then there is not a charge.

You won't need reservations for most campgrounds, but do plan ahead for the locations where you'll stop for the night. The closer you get to Maine, the less likely that you'll be able to find a truck stop, WalMart, or Cracker Barrel where you can stay overnight in a pinch.
If we want to stay in a particular park, or if we will be traveling over a holiday weekend, we usually make reservations ahead of time. National Parks and some state parks fill up quickly so it's a good idea to plan ahead for those. Before leaving home we have a list of campgrounds and phone numbers that are possible stopping places. We also have the Trailer Life Directory and Passport America Directory handy. We'll call ahead in the morning to check availability. We've never had a problem finding a place. Like someone else said, we can stand just about anything for one night. We have never stayed in a Wal Mart or truck stop. There is always a campground somewhere.
Some of our favorite campgrounds are the ones we found along the way.
