Local traffic....

I drove form Huntington Beach, CA to Northridge, CA yesterday (about 100 miles round) Via the 405 Freeway. This is normally a very heavy traffic area, especially in the LAX, Santa Monica, and Westwood areas. I was surprised as I was able to maintain maximum speed limits or more the entire trip, both ways. The North bound trip started around 0830 hrs. with the return at about 1500 hrs. Those of you that are familiar with this route, I think would agree that this is rather unusual.

Perhaps folks were already at their destinations. I guess Monday evening will be the real test.

See you out there,

Robert

we also have probably the highest prices for fuel compared to the rest of the country.

As with all major holidays we stay at home or if on the road for the summer, stay put. The older I get the less I like crowds or traffic. Heck I even quit going to air shows because of the crowds and I used to love going to the National Air Races in Reno. Age thing I guess.

Did you take a picture? That freeway is never empty any day of the week! Well, 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday is usually open, at least it was when I lived there two years ago. But 3 p.m. on a Saturday is normally traffic filled. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the price of gas, however, and more that people were already where they wanted to be on the Saturday of a holiday weekend. People in L.A. don't worry about the price of gas...at least, no one that I know back in SoCal worries or admits to it!

I do remember when I had to work on days that many people got off - Columbus Day, Yom Kippur, etc - traffic would be light. It's so much fun to drive in L.A. when the traffic is light. It's such a rarity that I feel that everyone should be able to go as fast as they want without fear of getting a ticket because of the pure gleeful joy in not being stuck in traffic makes it a bright and shiny day!

Here in Kentucky, campgrounds are packed. Our friends had to put off camping until Tuesday because they waited until a month ago to make reservations and everything was booked.

Every state park in the North Texas area was listed as full for this weekend. We stayed home.

It's down on the central coast of Calif. Most the campgrounds I hosted are not nearly as busy as they normally would be right now. In fact Morro Bay state park a favorite to many had many cancellations this holiday and were selling sites first come first serve Friday night. Something that never happens on a holiday, especially Memorial Day. Most ca. state park reservations (at least on the central coast) are made up to 7 months in advance. Fuel was much cheaper then and I imagine with the sharp increase in fuel the $7.50 cancellation charge outweighed the costs of the trip by far.

Here in New Smyrna Beach Fl. I would say every thing is off. Traffic I know is down also went to a restraint that most of the time you can`t hardly get in on Sunday for lunch was about 1/3 or less full today at 12.30. I live close to the
main drag to the beach that is all ways backed up on the weekends and yesterday at 10.00 in the morning you could all most ride a bicycle down the road with out getting run over. I live about a mile from the first stop light going in to town and a lot of time on weekends traffic will back up to my subdivision
and yesterday just a car here and there on the road.

If every one would stay home when they could they mite get the message. I don`t mean put off vacation`s and such just make every trip count and slow down would make a big dent in gas sales.

Wink

Everything around here has been full since Wednesday night. But one SP, is undergoing renovation, so that was a loss of 175 spots. I'm sure thats why everything else is packed to the gills!

Lots of campers here. I know the NPS CG @ Frisco was full Thursday. The one at Cape Point is closed due to standing water so that put all the load on Frisco.
I have talked with several people that say they won't be comming back, not so much the cost of fuel, but the fact that most of our beach is now closed for birds.
It's a shame that our beach was voted #6 in the best beach listing last year and now you can't get to most of it.

Guess the birds are putting more money in the economy than tourists. So they get the nice beach.

I live close to a National Recreation Area and there are about a third of the camper we had last year. Most of the ones here are in tents. The water level of the lake is about 40 ft. below normal so that probably has some to do with it though.

Were in Estes Park Colorado, Vacancy everywhere we went, which is very unusual for memorial weekend. But the fact that the snow is there may have something to do with it
