I'm estimating the cost of a trip to Yellowstone NP or the Oregon coast driving my 37' motorhome, towing my Liberty or simply driving the Jeep and staying in motels. 2 adults, one 15 year old.

Yellowstone Trip:

Trip, 10 days. Miles: Las Vegas to Yellowstone, return, 1600.

Interesting results:

Motorhome:

Estimate 7 MPG 230 gallons @ $4.75 per gallon: $1100.00
10 nights campgrounds @ $50.00 per night 500.00
Food, prepared in motor home. 10 days @ $20.00 200.00

Estimated transportation and meals: $1800.00

Driving the Liberty:

Estimate 20 MPG 80 gallons @ $.4.75 per gallon: $380.00
10 nights motels @ $180.00 per night 1800.00
eating 3 meals per day @ $60.00 600.00

Estimated transportation, lodging, meals: $2780.00

Basically, the trip by motor home would cost about $1,000 LESS!

The cost of motels and RV parks were taken from various websites looking at rooms and parks in the Jackson Hole and West Yellowstone areas.

WOW!

The difference is slightly more than you calculated as you used $4.75 per gallon of gas for the Liberty. Gas is probably more like $3.75 a gallon.

It is usually easy to justify longer trips.

And you don't have to sleep in someone elses bed where who know what is on the unwashed bed spread.

Plus when you have to make rest Stops you have your own facilities and don't need a cooler for drinks and snacks. RVing is the way to go in my opinion.

Happy RVing

In our assessment, it was not about operating costs, it was about the accelerated depreciation of our mobile asset caused by the current economic outlook, we are now Park Model dwellers.

Diesel is now $4.54 here and regular is $4.05....that was a few days ago -- I'm afraid to look again!

Also -- motels/hotels do NOT wash the pillows! I'm for the RV, too!
