I've searched and searched but could not find any questions on the above subject. What kind of preventive maintenance is required for RV roof air conditioners? Is there a more efficient filter available than the flimsy thing that comes with a new RV? Do I need to take the cover off and clean the coils? Where can I find some guidance? Thanks for any help or information.

Use the filter for the A/C. Other filter types may reduce the airflow causing the A/C to freeze up.

There are two levels of PM on roof top A/C units.. Depending on the unit
Level 1: All of them:
Remove shroud and clean whatever needs cleaning. If the fins on the condenser or evaporator coils are bent use a comb (they make special combs) to straighten them out. Remove any leaves or other debris that has made it's way inside the housing clean what's dirty and inspect for evidence of leaks (No microscope, if you see it, well... too bad)
How to remove the shroud.. There are two designs, one has screws on top, the other they are on the side
Simple Green and water or special A/C cleaner are both suggested by others.. I use mostly water myself
Do this every season Inside, you might check the mounting bolts to insure they have not come loose, this is optional.
Inside, clean the fliters.. (IN fact do this every week)
Level 2: SOME A/C units.. NOTE: I don not know if this design is used on any RV
The first time you have the cover off inspect the blower motor, specifically where the shaft enters the motor. Look for a lubrication point.. If exists, lube per manufacturer's recommendations.. at least once a season If not. Then obviously you need not do this again.
Final comment: That is about it
The cooling unit is sealed and needs no maintenance beyond routine cleaning

I have some issues with using Simple Green- unless you get the special aircraft version. It's kind of hard on aluminum unless you rinse really well.
It's a great cleaner/degreaser, I just don't like it for RVs with a lot of aluminum.
