This August, my wife and I will pick up a 25' rental RV in Portland OR for two weeks vacation. We are English and this is our first vacation in the US. The posts on RV.net have been extremely helpful in terms of routes and destinations, but what I would be grateful for is a 'gross error check' on the extent of our ambitions; in other words - what would be a sensible range for our travels.
We have already discounted visiting Yellowstone as we have enough of traffic jams at home. Now, however, I am wondering whether we should be more prescriptive still and stay west of 93 or even195/95, south of 12 and north of the 42nd parallel. Our ambitions for the trip are to see some superb scenery (mountain, forest etc) and to do some walking/horseriding. There certainly seems enough to do within the delineated area, but would welcome your thoughts on whether extending our range a bit further west would open up opportunities denied us within the proposed 'box'. Clearly we do not want to spend all our time on the road, but recognise that to get somewhere one needs to travel.
My apologies for rambling, any advice you can offer would be gratefully received.
East of Portland is the Columbia Gorge (Multnomah Falls, Bridal Vail Falls and much more). The entire area around Mount Hood is spectacular. Walk or ski on the glacier, yes, even in August. I used to camp in the parking lot which, in the summer, is virtually empty. No one bothered me but that was 40 years ago. the entire Oregon Coast is nice but in August Highway 101 will be very crowded, mostly with vehicles licensed in California. (I'm ashamed to go home with my California licensed motorhome.) I could easily spend two weeks along the Columbia River and Mount Hood area. The distances are really manageable. Plenty of places to rent horses but most will insist on managed trail rides. It's easier now to rent motor driven ATVs that four-footed ATVs.
The entier Oregon coast is spectacular. You could go from Portland, do the Columbia gorge, then down the middle to Mt. St. Helens, then to the coast back up to Portland. With only two weeks I wouldn't even think of leaving Oregon. You don't want to spend all your time driving.

Although a traffic jam in Yellowstone is nothing like that in any city - plenty to see and enjoy while you're waiting, and it's not really THAT bad - for the 2-week timeframe you have, I agree there is plenty to see & do in the Pacific NW. You've gotten lots of good advice so far; I'd add Crater Lake to the do-not-miss list.
Definately see Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. From Mt. St. Helens take Wa Hwy 12 to Hwy 101 and then down the coast. Hope you made reservations already but you may get lucky with vacancies

You are wise to ask. When we have visitors from the UK (my husband is English), they often have a 'to-do' list that might include the Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park and Mount Rushmore in a two-week's visit! Since, in England, it is possible to traverse the country via the M-1 in a day, such a trip seems feasible here, as well.
The above posts give good advice--it's hard to advise you to miss Mt. Rainier or the North Cascades but I think the best use of your limited time would be spent on the beautiful Oregon Coast. If you can manage Crater Lake and Mt. Hood, as suggested, then, so much the better.
Be aware that, in August, everyone else will have the same idea. But if you are willing to camp without hookups at least part of the time, you will almost surely find accommodations. Oregon has many National Forest Campgrounds to choose from. Do your research and keep your options open. And enjoy! We love the Northwest!

2 weeks is not a lot of time, unless you plan to drive 400 miles ( 7 hours) a day. Better I think to plan on parking in one place for a couple of days while you visit the area and then move on. Lots of mountains and scenery. ocean is nice but can be cool in August. What exactly do you want to see and what kind of weather do you want to have. Really hot? cool? This will help is out suggestions.
Assuming the goal is to see as much scenery as possible, were it me, I'd start with a day trip (rent a car, not with the RV)to sight see around Mt. St. Helens.
Next day load up the RV and go to the coast, driving north to south and meander to the South as far as Coos Bay.
From Coos Bay I'd head over to the Crater Lake area via Roseburg and work my way up Hwy 97 through Central Oregon, eventually up to The Dalles and back to Portland via 84 and side roads through the Columbia River Gorge.
As a side note, if golf is on your plans, Bandon Dunes just south of Coos Bay would be a "don't miss" trip and then in Central Oregon there are a myriad of fine courses.
