It is more apparent here in winter. The tailgate gets packed with snow from the backdraft.
I think you've hit the nail on the head. Quite a few gravel roads at the tail end of a lot of our trips. I'm sure the trailer in tow add to the effect give the rocks nowhere to go. I tried to avoid it but it might be time for a mustache.
It can definately be from rocks bouncing off the trailer. In this area lots of ranchers have goose neck stock trailers. The tailgate becomes the most rock chipped part of the pickup because of the trailers.
