to me quiet hours are just that QUIET! I don't care if your genny is a the quietest one of the bunch. How would you like to be sleeping in a tent with that thing running? Sure the guy in the moho 3 sites down won't hear it but what about that guy tring to sleep in a tent 20 feet from your genny?

Moral of the story, you can be just as big of a jerk with a $1000 genny as you can with a $250 one.

The only time I use my old 800w Suzuki genset is to run the blender for crushed ice rum drinks! I think they are a pain and irritating to camp next to! Too many peaple fire them up in thier camp site and then leave with thier genset running. Yes, thier are quite models out there but there are also lots of noisy ones.

The only time we plug in while camping is during the late winter and early spring (-15C is my cut-off) to run the furance and tank heater. The rest of the time we dry camp and our solar panel provide endless power. They are always on and always quite; no maintenance. I know generators are cheap but I cannot stand the noise and don't like to impose/irritate my neighbors.

We do 95% plus drying camping and we do like our electricty to run our gadgets. It is needed to run our hair dryers, microwave, AC, TV, etc. But the number one thing I use it for is the charge my trailer battery.

We have 2 Honda EU2000i, that have about 10 hours on them. That's after 16months of fulltime living in our camper.

We have them as backups, but with 390 watts of solar, never have to pull them out!

I show consideration for my neighbors too by using a super quiet generator, the Honda eu3000is. I even run it beyound CG quiet hours, sometimes all night long, on ECO Throttle. I keep it locked up in the bed of my truck, you can't hear it beyound my campsite, in fact, you can barely hear it anywhere in the campsite! I haven't had one complaint but would turn it off if asked! In my opinion, $1700 is well worth being able to run a generator, and have power all the time.

I agree. Just got back from camping and the guy across the road had a Champion. Not sure if it was the same as the "new" ones out there, but that thing was LOUD!! It was a 3,500 watt unit and I could hear it over mine standing right next to my Yamaha. He ran it every night for 5 hours to watch TV right up until quiet time. Have no idea how he could hear the TV!! Meanwhile...I have my Cobra inverter hooked up and run the TV off that rather than even bother with the Genny. $60 works for me to watch TV all day in silence when the weather is bad. Maybe the newer Champions are quieter...but not the one I heard. Half the people I see talking about not spending money on a quiet generator are the same ones plopping down 80K on a 5th wheel...go figure!!

I guess it depends on the kind of camping your doing....if your going to need a hair dryer, TV, AC, microwave or other power consuming toys then you will need a generator. We don't camp with any of this and manage with 80 watts of solar. I wish I had 390 watts of solar, Everymilesamemory!

My justification was when DW said we needed A/C even there were no elec. hookups.

I run my generator (HONDA eu3000is) beyound CG quiet hours because no other campers can hear it, PERIOD! Now that's being courteous to my CG neighbors because I fessed up the good $$ to ensure their piece and quiet!!!!!! I also stated that I would turn it off if ever asked to. I've camped next to people using the piece of junk , Off brand, not a Honda or Yamaha chatterbox generators and no one could ever convince me that their decible level is anywhere near as quiet as a Honda or Yamaha. Too bad these off brand manufacturers have convinced their owners/buyers that they are quiet. It's obvious these people haven't heard a Honda or Yamaha yet!!!!
