We took I-95 thru Maine and crossed into Canada at Houlton. On the way back, we crossed back into the states at Calais and took Highway 1 down to bar Harbor. Well worth the trip, especially Acadia NP...a must see.

Bar Harbor - definitely! Your choice of CGs w/o hookups in the national park, or several CGs w/ hookups in & around town.

We spent last summer there. Acadia National Park is right there and the town is fun too.

Bar Harbor is nice but very crowded. If I were you I would camp on the quiet side of the island in Southwest Harbor. Two excellent campgrounds-Smugglers Den [private] and Sewall [part of Acadia NP] both are excellent win-win situation. Great trails and views. Sites are very nice with plenty of room. You can get bus service to Bar Harbor and miss all of the traffic. You can get lobsters at Smugglers to eat at your site. You will not be disappointed.Enjoy you will love the island.

Bus service does not begin until June 23. You didn't say when your trip was, but I didn't want you to choose a campground based on traveling on the bus if it wasn't running.
We went to the park this weekend and did their "Earthcache" to play with some new GPS equipment. It was a lot of fun and took us to many parts of the park. See the Acadia NP website for details. It does involve two small hikes (but can be done without them if you know your latitude and longitude).
I live only 40 minutes from the park, so if you have questions about roads, attractions, etc. I would be glad to help. PM me.

The entire Mt. Desert area is well worth the stop. We love the Bar Harbor KOA, which is right on the water. Reserve a waterfront site if you can.

I am here now and still deciding on how we feel about it. We enjoyed the loop road and Cadillac Mtn. for the views. Bar harbor reminds me of many other tourist towns with many shops/resturants. I do believe the number of tour boats is rather nice but what I want to do doesn't start until late June. The CAT ferry is an awesome looking piece of equipment I'll buy the shirt and can say "been there, done that".

I'd highly recommend it. Yes, it's crowded in the summer but that's part of the fun of it all. The Bar Harbor KOA is pricey but top notch. Acadia is beautiful-take the carriage ride through the park. You aren't far from the ferry, either, should you decide to take it.
Life is too short to spend it all in one place!
