I'm a complete novice in the diesel world. Bought our 04 this winter and just made the first long trip towing our 5th wheel. No problems encountered until about 5 miles from home. Got off the Interstate, fueled up and ran into Wally world for a few supplies. On leaving there was a slight uphill grade.

The truck had no power to speak of, stumbled a little (if it was a gasser I would say it was flooded) and was belching the most enormous black cloud of death you can imagine. I've seen freight trains run by with less smoke. After a half mile or so, everything was back to normal both uphill and down. Nothing lit up on the dash. I'm going to the dealer to have error codes checked but wonder if anyone has thoughts on what could have happened?

Might be a clogged fuel filter. Sounds like our truck did with the clogged filter.

check your air intake or the big hose off the turbo the sometimes pop off.

Ditto that !! But you did state that it was back to normal later on...I would also change the fuel filters if you have not already done so.

maybe you didn't let it cool down befor you shut it off at wal mart and the turbo got hung up?

Well lets see it was running fine before your fueled up and now it doesn’t, you might have got a load of bad fuel. If you didn’t add gas then you will need to get some Diesel Fuel Conditioner and Cetane Booster and change out the fuel filter maybe up to 3 times. This happened to me and the station did pick up the cost of the filters and I did the labor.

Mine did that too on my psd..... ended up with a new EGR and Turbo??

First thing I would do is change the fuel filter. That is probably the problem. When the engine doesn't get the fuel pressure it's asking for (because of a dirty fuel filter) the computer puts the engine in safe mode. Once you turn the truck off and back on it will go away until the next time the pressure isn't reached. It will only get worse.

I keep a spare fuel filter and the tools needed to change it in the truck. Takes about 15 minutes.

Could be the filters but it seems strange that it would be back to normal within half a mile. The black smoke is usually from over fueling. Could be an EGR that is starting to gum up. If you float over to t h edieselstop.com and search on sticking egr, you'll have ours of reading. Somewhere buried in the threads is a how-to on cleaning the egr. Unfortunately it's something that has to be done on a regular basis with the early 6.0Ls.

The diesel fuel was from a high volume truck stop, so I'm reasonably confident it's not bad fuel. (And no, it was not gasoline, but I do understand that it happens from time to time!)

I will change the 2 fuel filters as suggested.

I will read the threads on sticking EGR valves. Is the EGR valve a user replacement item?
