I wouldn't trade my diesel for towing. By my math 6 miles per $3.75 a gallon gas compared to 12 miles per $4.60 a gallon is still a bargin. Not to mention the power. I do think Ebay is closer to price than people want to admit. Also agree on all trucks are taking a hit. RV'ing, ya gotta love it.

I just traded my gasser in for a diesel because, despite the higher price of fuel, I'm saving every money every month because of the increased fuel economy. Also, my towing power is obviously significantly improved.

Diesel prices haven't plumetted lately here locally. Gasser prices aren't doing great, but aren't horribly low, particularly on the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. 1/2 ton trucks and SUVs are in the tank locally. All of the 'casual users' who had trucks or SUVs just for the fun of it are unloading. People who typically have the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks have them because they have a need, either for work or pleasure, and so they won't trade them in and will keep driving them.

Just did a quick check of used diesel truck prices in our area and the prices haven't dropped much at all in the last year according to the used lot/dealership owners or sales managers. I know these 4 guys well. I called the local Ford dealer, Chevy Dealer, the Dodge truck dealer, and one large private lot owner. Ford said used prices are about 5%-10% below last year, Chevy said to figure about 5% lower, and Dodge said perhaps 10%-15% lower. The private lot owner said it depends on the brand, mileage, condition, and MPG's the vehicle should get but generally, only roughly 10% lower. All said sales are decent and they can't keep GOOD used diesel pickups on the lot as they go quick as do the smaller engine gas pickups. Little different than a year ago. None would speculate as to what the new DPF reburn diesel trucks will bring when used. Jury is still out. They said they just expect maybe a less demand and maybe lower prices due to the newer trucks lower MPG's and higher fuel cost now. BTW, the Chevy and Dodge dealerships are owned by the same person and right next to each other. Couldn't talk to the GMC dealership owner as he and his sales manager were out of town and I don't trust what some other dude with his opinions would say. I'll only to talk to somebody who knows the real facts not slants/thoughts/or opinions.

Trucks like this 2003 Chevrolet Silverado LS 2500HD 4WD EXT CAB DURAMAX DIESEL from Michigan would have had a bid alot higher than $6,800 on it's last day on ebay a year ago.

Who cares? No different than the housing market in a down turn now, but it will come back in time. Glad you got out of your diesel in time if it was getting too costly. Fuel prices are going to do what they do and the economy will adjust accordingly. The rapid changes is what has everybody spooked, it'll level out in time. The good thing is this will force automakers to make more efficient vehicles, bad thing is fuel will probably be $7 gal. to offset any gains. If it gets too high for me then I'll fold, but for now i'll ante up and hope the oil companies are bluffing. Can't stop living, only got one shot at this and I've come this far already !!!

You’re also forgetting that the price goes up at or very near the end of the auction. So that low price with more then an hour left really is not what you should be looking at but the price it sells for after the auction has ended.

8.1 Van,

I wouldn't buy squat from ebay. Not even at less than half of it's book value! Great place to unload junk or problem childs without ramifications as we know many who have done just that. Once you accept the bid-won item, it's yours and the issues that show up later are yours also!!! In our own family, our son and his wife have bid and won so many times and they have since quit also because of all the misrepresented junk items they've gotten. Buying sight unseen vehicles/boats/RV's/etc/big dollar items thru ebay is very risky as some will win and some will lose. I don't ever want to be the loser and make sure of it! Our son and his wife got the hint when a very same item appeared on ebay a few times within a one years period but from different sellers. Simple!!! ebay makes money on each sale each time. If it works for you then I'm glad you're happy. You get what you pay for and I'll forgo the aggravation and disappointment! I like winning and do!!!! So does our community!

We drove our truck down to Farmersville, LA and picked up a 3 year old expensive truck camper for our friends bid-won on ebay a couple years ago and after they had it a year, they found out why they had gotten it so cheap (68% of book value at the time). What's hidden is only known to the seller. Now another sucker owns it after buying it again on ebay and ebay laughed all the way to the bank. No thanks! I'll deal with those I can trust and stand behind the items they sell! Buy cheap, get cheap!!!! We've given our economy, jobs, and money away to other countries with our cheap ideas and now will suffer the consequences. Did we really save money with our insanity? Do you like the lower wages and the wonderful cost of energy etc now? We created this problem and now we get to live with it. Enjoy!!!

Gee!!! Maybe that's why we haven't have any problems with any of our big ticket purchases and haven't even had any warranty claims for more than the last 18+ years. We don't buy cheap stuff! Sure has kept us happy! Life is great and we realize everyone must make a fair profit as that's a big component of the basis of our free market economy.

8.1 is obsessed with diesel prices for some reason. Glad you sold your EX when you did if that works for you. I personally am very glad I just pruchased a Duramax truck. I don't really care about the resale value as it's not for sale and I paid cash for it.
