Yes...this would be painful had it happen to me as i'm an avid yaker and take it on every camping trip.
Surprising though, most campers are family oriented, friendly and respect Gods creation.
I hope you have the funds to replace it and are able to forgive this trash "woops" person.
Bummer. I guess that you got spoiled at Rollin's Pond. We camp at a lot of the NYS parks in the Adirondacks, including Rollin's sister park, Fish Creek Pond, and everyone leaves canoes and kayaks unlocked.
We used to lock up our canoe and kayak at the campsites. Everyone used to pick on us for doing that. I guess that we should start locking our boats up again.
Sorry for your loss. Will pass the word to keep an eye out for a damaged bright orange two man 14' Perception Acadia II. There aren't that many of them around.

Yes, we really loved Rollins Pond and how convenient it always is- boats right there, pretty much onsite- which means they should be covered, but who knows?
We're heading to Buck Pond in late July- I hope we have a tandem replacement by then.

Sorry to hear about that. If you bought the kayak with a credit card, you may have additional coverage for loss or theft. Check with your bank. I used that coverage to pay for the homeowners insurance deductible when I had a laptop stolen.

I hate that for you. We kayak a good bit. We have two tandem perception boats, a Jocasee and a Keowee II. I have never locked them up. Maybe I should start.
While camping this weekend another camper made a comment about me locking my $2500 mountain bike to my trailer. I let the comment go because I could not find a way to explain the cost of the bike without sounding pompous. While any determined loser can find a way I'd rather make it hard for him and maybe a little easier to catch him in the act. I keep my kayak locked to the trailer as well and use a set of wheels to get it to the water. Sorry about your loss.
yelwah -- have you ever tent camped??? How did you 'lock' your tent?? Know the 'toys' are bigger but the premise is the same - if you can't stand to lose it - don't take it.
We also take 4 mountain bikes with us and chain them to a tree through a bike stand. At about $300/bike, it can get expensive to replace them.
As my husband said, "locks deter the honest people". If someone wants to take something, they will usually find a way. You just can't expect that there is some kind of "code" among campers- good and bad people exist everywhere.
Luckily, no one got hurt, the dogs are ok and it was just a "'thing". We'll either replace it when we can or just do without. It's just hurtful that we took the precaution, locked it, left it in a "patrolled" boat launch and it still got taken.
This is off topic but with an expandable, do you have to close up the bed ends each and every time you leave the camper? In case of theft? Would be rather easy to break in through the bed ends even if the camper door is locked? What do you folks do?
We progressed from tenting, through pop ups and now into an HTT. We don't keep anything in with the camper that would be an issue if it went missing. We don't carry a tv, the radio that came with the camper is worthless. Cell phones get locked in the truck.
The only thing we take that has value is the sporting goods- bikes and boats. Luckily we manage with the less expensive equipment. If our kayak was tremendously pricey, I wouldn't take it with us.
That being said, "pricey" is subjective- it's going to be different for each person. If our homeowner's deductable wasn't $500, we could have almost replaced the kayak.
I think I worry more about someone damaging the bed ends on the camper. Long ago, while tent camping, someone put a big slash in that. People are just strange sometimes. No telling where they will strike.
Sorry to hear this. Was the Kayak registered? do you have an old sales slip or ID numbers for it? Since for all you know it could end up down river at a nearby campground or sold on ebay. In fact, I would watch auction sites like Ebay for the possibility that the buttheads who stole it may not be as smart as they think. Just a suggestion. Good Luck!
