I have a 1994 Atwood G6A-7 waterheater. I need to replace the drain plug that cracked. It is not the standard 1/2" (91857)drain plug that Atwood now uses. I contacted Atwood and they can' t find information for that far back, yet.
The original plug is slightly smaller than 1/2". Has anybody encountered this and what is the fix?

Drive over to a plumbing supply shop and borrow a micrometer Tool to measure the Threads! Or Just try several Brass or Plastic plugs until You find the size that fits!

I'd do like Rob said, except I'd ask the plumber dude at the shop to supply you with the replacement. Any good plumber should be able to look at it once and know 'zactly what you need.

In almost 30 years as a RV tech, I have NEVER seen a drain plug on an Atwood that does NOT use the 1/2 inch plug. I HAVE seen various modifications to install petcocks and such. I would bet the original plastic plug is either stripped out and you need to remove the plastic that is stuck on the inside threads OR someone has installed a insert that is slightly smaller and that is what you are seeing. Long shot is someone screwed up the original threads on the tank and have used some type of threaded insert that is smaller than the original 1/2 inch threads. Doug

This could be the case. Now I just need to find the replacement (didn't have time today).

1/2" plug vs my cracked original.

cdman,
I had a '94 Dutchman with an Atwood water heater and it used the standard 1/2" plug. Chances are that someone modified the original in some way as doug stated. The old plug looks like it might be a metric straight thread.

Now that I have seen the plug , I'm thinking that You will need to run a 1/2 " Tap into the Tank to correct the Cross threading that appears to have caused the original plug to distort! Be Very careful and That Should fix the problem!

I took the plug to hydraulic supply company. They have both Imperial and Metric plugs. They measured the plug(diameter, threads etc) and didn't find anything that would fit.
Rob, The poor picture doesn't really help but there is no visable cross-threading on the plug. But retapping might be my only option without replacing the tank.
I ran across one other person that has this odd size plug and needs a new one too.

I have run across some Nylon plugs that have a short taper on them, and some that have a long taper.
You might try your local ACE, Home Depot, or the like, and see if you can locate a 1/2" Nylon plug made by Watts, P/N PL-1189.
I use them in our Atwood water heater, and they seem to work for us.

cdman,
Could it be a screw thread? 9/16-18; 9/16-24; 5/8-18 UNF?
